Halket or Halkhead?

I found a fascinating story involving three Flemish knights fighting three Scottish ones in a tournament in 1449. At the moment I am entering the story into my system but there is a question about the identity of one Scottish knight.

The story calls him John Ross of Halket, but I think it could be John Ross of Halkhead, probable father of John Ross, 1st Baron Ross of Halkhead, but it could also be the son.

CP is not very helpful as it is uncertain about whether they are father and son, and also dates given make it possible that either one was involved in that tournament on 25 February 1449.

The younger John was knighted after 10 August 1450 but before 17 January 1451-----would this imply that it was not him? Were they allowed to participate in tournaments without having been knighted? If not, then it was the other John Ross.

And Halket and Halkhead is that the same?

Once the story is entered, I gladly send it to whoever would like to see it.
With many thanks.

It's well within the bounds of the spelling of the time. Looking at
the "Mitchell Rolls" section of the Heraldry Society of Scotland
website, I find the following spellings for the Lords Ross of Halkhead

The Scots Roll (1455) : Ross of Halkhed
Sir David Lindsay of the Mount (1542) :lord Ross of Harkatt
Hamilton Armorial (1560) : Lord Rosse
Forman's Armorial (1563) : Lord Ros
Slains Armorial (1565) : Lord rose
Seton Armorial (1591) : Lord Ros
Lindsay of the Mount Secundus (1599): Lord of Ross
Dunvegan Armorial (1600) : Rosse L Rosse
Kings & Nobilities Arms (1638) : Lord Ross of Halket

The only example of Halket is a good deal later than your example, but
it shows that it is a possibility.
