Fw: Henriette Marie

What people are called is a very broad subject, we have nicknames, known as and so on.
Heinrich von Mecklenburg married and in his new country he is known as Hendrik, what is then his name? Apparently Henriette/Henrietta was her main name, that some people call her Mary, even John Aubrey, doesn't make it so. Since when is "shy Di" the princess of Wales, of Fergie Duchess of York? Even Richardson has taken a step back and is preferring Henriette Marie over Henrietta Maria. Quite sensible.

Dear Leo

Richardson is displaying his incredible ignorance of history yet again.

At Oxford I wrote a dissertation on Henrietta Maria. She would have been appalled at changing her name to "Mary" whether or not this was done by English people who didn't know any better.

She was extremely proud of being the daughter (and last legitimate child) of King Henri IV and named after her father. Marie was conventionally given to every French princess, but Henriette was her unique name.

In the same year she was born her father's last bastard was also a girl and named Marie Henriette, so that preferring Marie (or "Mary) over Henriette would have seemed to the queen a personal insult, swapping names with an illegitimate sister.
