Kalends system of dating in old style calendar

Hi,
I'm a little confused about the 'Kalends/Nones/Idus' system of dating. I
have come across a few examples of this in very early parish registers and
understand, for example, that VI Kal. April would be the 27th March.
However, I have an example that was written April xth Calends 1547, which
would be 23 March 1547. But, bearing in mind that the new year starts on
the 25th March, does this mean 10 days before the kalends of [April 1547],
which would be 23 March 1546[/7] or 10 days before the kalends of April, in
the year they wrote as 1547, which would be 23 March 1547[/8].
Any comments would be appreciated!
Thanks
Vicki
