Help me think this out

I am trying to think what this phrase means in an inquisition I have.
"Joan and Elizabeth Echyngham, daughters of William lord of Etchingham, knight and of Joan his wife have land lying together in same quarter which descended to them by hereditary right on the death of Joan their mother..etc.
William Echyngham was first married to Alice Batisford and maybe she had these girls. She died before 1397. Joan Fitzalan Arundel married William Echyngham second and we know she had a son Thomas b 1401 d1444. This inquisition dated 1415 does not mention Thomas. Would not Thomas have been mentioned as in hereditary right if this was his mother? He does mention Elizabeth as his sister in his will, but sister Joan is deceased by then. I feel that maybe Joan should be Alice as the one who left the property... Am I grasping at straws. I am not clear what hereditary right means in this context.

A straight reading of what you have posted means that Joan and
Elizabeth Echyngham were daughters of William and Joan (Fitzalan)
Echyngham and they inherited land that was their mothers. The time
line you've provided does not give any insight to why they couldn't be
Joan's daughters.
