gateway argh!

It appears the gateway between soc.med and the gen-med list is not
working. I know that Leo got my messages sent to gen-med, but they are
not appearing in the news reader and also I'm not getting any messages
to soc.med echoed in my mailbox.

I have no idea what's wrong but it's very annoying :)
So I'm posting this through the news reader at groups.google just in
case anyone who can fix it is listening.

Will,

I'm the GEN-MEDIEVAL co-listowner currently "on duty."

I think that your problem is probably due to your AOL email address. See
the comments at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/, which is the first place to
look for information about RootsWeb or gateway problems.

RootsWeb periodically has difficulties with AOL and other service providers
who start to think that the large volume of email coming from rootsweb.com
is spam. This may happen because some people with AOL accounts want to
unsubscribe from RootsWeb lists but don't know how and end up reporting to
AOL that the list messages are spam. (Note that the help desk cited above
has a list of Most Common Questions, including "How do I
subscribe/unsubscribe to a mailing list, the RootsWeb Review, or the Product
Watch?")

Actually, it appears that messages posted to the SGM newsgroup are, in fact,
going across the gateway to Gen-Medieval in a pretty timely manner. But
mail originating in Gen-Med posts only to Gen-Med and hasn't crossed the
gateway to SGM since Thursday morning. Is the ungated mail lost forever to
the SGM readers?

RootsWeb makes a big effort to gate all messages, and generally when there
are problems with the gateway, the ungated messages are queued and
eventually gated. However, sometimes a few messages are not saved or are
not saved long enough and thus are not gated.

This message from John Higgins, originating on the Gen-Med mailing list side
of the gateway, did get to the SGM newsgroup, though it took more than 12
hours to get to the server on which I access SGM.

The current AOL problem was triggered by the relocation of some RootsWeb
list servers (and the corresponding changes in IP addresses).

The appended information was just sent to me by the administrator of
AOLers-RootsWeb-L@rootsweb.com. (A whitelist is a list of servers that
might seem to be spammers but are actually OK.)

In this particular case it was the change of IP address of the list servers
that resulted in the problem. AOL has the servers whitelisted by IP address.

You might want to send your AOL subscribers to my post to the
AOLers-RootsWeb list in the archives here:

I am still not getting messages from Gen-Med/SGM.

I sent an email message to the postmaster as you suggested. This
problem is getting a bit long-in-the-tooth now.

I agree.

Checking http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/, it appears that AOL has still not
resolved the problem.

Just under 20% of the subscribers to GEN-MEDIEVAL have AOL addresses. Under
normal circumstances, they would have been automatically removed from the
GEN-MED mailing list because of excessive bounced email, but RootsWeb has
kept them on the list. So we just need AOL to get its act together.

Actually, what we need is to close the damned gateway forever and be
done with it.

The problem is that AOL is refusing posts from RootsWeb. That has
nothing to do with the gateway. Further, were we to sever the gateway,
that would not miraculously cause AOL to get their act together.
