Dear Newsgroup ~

King John's well known illegitimate son, Richard, appears in records
under different names. He occurs variously as Richard Fitz Roy [see,
for example, Curia Regis Rolls 8 (1938): 326-327; 16 (1979):175]; as
Richard de Chilham [see Cal. Liberate Rolls 1 (1916): 60; 2 (1930):
136]; as Richard Fitz Roy de Chilham [see Curia Regis Rolls, 17
(1991): 26], and, occasionally as Richard de Warenne [see Curia Regis
Rolls 16 (1979): 232, 450].

The name "de Chilham" was derived from Richard's major land holding at
Chilham, Kent held of his wife's inheritance. The name "de Warenne"
appears to derive from his mother's maiden name.

The Chronicle of Richard of Gloucester records the following regarding
his parentage:

""... Sir Richard Fitz le Rei... he were a bast ibore [baseborn] Vor
the erles daughter of Wareine is gode [good] moder was, And is fader
the king John" [Reference: Watson, Memoirs of the Earls of Warren
and Surrey and Their Descs. 1 (1782): 221-222 (citing Chronicle of
Robert of Gloucester: 515]..

To date, no concrete evidence has surfaced to indicate Richard's
mother's identity. However, I suspect she was Isabel de Warenne,
daughter of Hamelin, 5th Earl of Surrey, by Isabel, daughter and
heiress of William de Warenne, 3rd Earl of Surrey. This Isabel de
Warenne married (1st) Robert de Lacy (died 1193), by whom she had no
issue. She married (2nd) before 1196 Gilbert de l'Aigle (died 1231),
of Pevensey, Sussex, by whom she had three sons, Gilbert, Richer, and
William, and one daughter, Alice (wife of John de Lacy, Knt., Constable
of Chester, 1st Earl of Lincoln). Isabel de Warenne died without
surviving legitimate issue shortly before 30 Nov. 1234.

Recently, I came across another record dated 1233-1234 in which King
John's son, Richard, occurs as Richard de Warenne. This record reads
as follows:

Date: Year 25 of Episcopate of Hugh de Welles, Bishop of Lincoln

"Ludingtone.
[Reference: W.P.W. Phillimore ed., Rotuli Hugonis de Welles, Episcopi
Lincolniensis 1209-1235 2 (Lincoln Rec. Soc. 6) (1913): 179].

The above record shows that "Richard de Warenne son of King John"
presented to the church of Luddington, Northampton in 1233-1234.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
