Your interesting message adds one more child to those I had in my system. A
few observations, for the parents of those children I have the following
information:
John (de) Arundel, 3rd son of Richard Fitzalan, Earl of Arundel, and Rleanor
of Lancaster.
born ???? he died in December 1379 in the Irish Sea.
On 17 February 1359 he married Eleanor Mautravers.
In CP Volumne VIII page 586 we find that in 1364 John, Lord Mautravers died
and his heirs were his granddaughters, Joan and Eleanor. Joan married twice
and apparently died young and childless, leaving her sister Eleanor as sole
heir. According to modern doctrine Eleanor became de Jure Baroness
Mautravers. Instead of _modern doctrine_ read _in hindsight_, in other words
in her life time she was not regarded to be Baroness Mautravers de jure or
in any other way.
Probably in consequence of his marriage, from 4 August 1377 to 20 October
1379, he was summoned to Parliament, whereby he _may be held to have become
Lord Arundel_ The barony of Arundel would probably be held to be the same
Barony as that of Mautravers, and the summons of 1377 to be one in right of
his wife, and consequently not one creating a new dignity.
He was appointed Marshal of England. Being in command of a naval expedition
in aid of the Duke of Brittany, he defeated the French fleet off the coast
of Cornwall, but later, 15 or 16 December 1379, was wrecked and drowned in
the Irish Sea. He appears to have been one of the fops of the period, for he
had on board 52 suits of clothes. His widow remarried and died in 1405.
Now two children,
I do not have Richard "mentioned in the wills of William and his wife
d.1436. Burke's Extinct Peerage 1866 does not mention Richard and the
brother William (I presume you mean he is his brother?) is marked off as
unmarried. This wonderful book "The Most Noble Order of the Garter" by Peter
J. Begent and Hubert Chesshyre, on page 311 gives that William was about
1395 nominated for the Garter and died in1400. In this list no spouses are
given anyway, and so that does not mean anything. As William died in 1400,
it must be Richard who died in 1436.
"Joan, spoken of though not by name in her grandfather's will and living in
1375".
In "Plantagenet Ancestry of Seventeenth Century Colonists", by David Faris,
1st ediditon, 1996 page 95. We find quite a lot. Also that she died 12
September 1404.
Amongst the sources for Joan is mentioned:
(Agnes, widow of Sir William Arundel, K. G., brother of this Joan, in her
will dated 6 September 1401 mentions her sister "Brian".) I presume with
sister Brian, she really means Joan who was then a widow (but not for very
long). Her 1st husband William de Brien had died 23 September 1395.
I hope this helps a little.
Best wishes

Knight, Thomas Relle, Johanna Ayre and Master John Gren lane Rector of
the Church at Fynchele. In witness of this I place my seal. Given in
the Feast of Saint Ambrose (4 April), the year of the Lord one thousand
four hundred and eight."
Issue: three sons
A) John de Arundel, Lord Mautravers, born 1 August 1385, Ditton,
Buckinghamshire, betrothed about 1395 to Elizabeth Talbot (born about
1380, died about 1406), eldest daughter of Richard, 4th Lord Talbot;
married by 1407, Eleanor Berkeley (m. 2ndly, about 1423, Sir Richard
Poynings, m. 3rdly, before May 1439, Walter, 1st Lord Hungerford; died
1 August 1455), daughter of Sir John Berkeley of Beverstone,
Gloucestershire, and died 21 April 1421, leaving issue two sons. They
are the ancestors of the later earls of Arundel.
B) Sir Edward Arundel, of Aynho, Northamptonshire, born 1387, married
by 1408, Elizabeth Scargill (died 30 April 1479; buried Aynho church),
daughter of Sir John Scargill by his wife Joan Warburton, and died
without issue 2 or 3 November 1412; buried Austin Friars church,
London.
C) Sir Thomas Arundel, of Beechworth Castle, Surrey, born 1388/90,
married after April 1408, Joan Moyne (m. 2ndly, by 1437, John Burdens),
daughter of Henry Moyne, and died overseas (probably fighting in
France) 1430-31, leaving issue, 1 son and 1 daughter.
C1) William Arundel, died beyond sea before 1436-7
C2) Eleanor Arundel, heiress of Beechworth Castle, married 1st,
Sir Thomas Browne, of Eythorn, Kent (b. 1414, d. 20 July 1460), and had
7 sons and 1 dau. They were ancestors of the Viscounts Montagu.
Eleanor married 2nd, Thomas Vaughn.
Sir William Arundel, born before 1375, KG (1395), Governor of Rochester
Castle, married Agnes ----- (d. after 6 September 1401) [parentage
unknown], and died without issue August 1400; buried St. Andrew Priory,
Rochester.
Will of Sir William Arundel, KG [from 'Testamenta Vetusta', Vol. 1, p.
150]:
"William Arundel, Knight, at London, August 1st, 1400. My body to be
buried in the Priory at Rochester, at the back of the high altar. The
LXXX l. which King Richard promised me, and I was indebted to
Rochester, I will be paid at the discretion of my Lord of Canterbury;
my Lady of Hereford; to my wife Agnes all my jewels, to my carnal
brother Sir Richard Arundel all my lands, and my vessels of silver; to
our loving nephew Sir William Arundel, Knight."
Will of Dame Agnes Arundel [from 'Testamenta Vetusta', Vol. 1, p. 156]:
"Agnes de Arundel, September 6th, 1401. My body to be buried in the
Priory of St. Andrew's in Rochester, under the tomb where my husband
and me are pictured; to the Countess of Hereford; to my Lady mother; to
my sisters the Ladies Ros and Brian, and Margaret Cobham; to my brother
Sir Richard de Arundel; to Dame Margaret Felbrigge; to Dame Catherine
St. Liz; to Dame Isabel Vache."
Edward Arundel, born by 1375, died before 1400. Called in the family
pedigree Thomas al's Edward, and called Edward in his grandfather the
3rd Earl of Arundel's 1375 will, is described by Glover as "Thomas
Arundel miles". As it seems ridiculous that the earl of Arundel would
get the name wrong of his own grandson, he was probably named Edward,
died young, and Glover confused him with Sir Thomas Arundel of
Beechworth Castle above.
Henry Arundel, born by 1375, died before 1400. No further information
on him. Named in his grandfather the 1375 will of his grandfather the
3rd Earl of Arundel. No further information on him - he probably died
young, certainly before 1400. Sir William Arundel, KG, in his 1400
will, mentions a nephew Sir William Arundel, and there has been
speculation that this nephew was the son of Henry or his brother Edward
above. Yet this is almost impossible chronologically. 'Testamenta
Vetusta' is full of error, and the original will of Sir William
Arundel, KG, should be checked (if it still exists) to verify the
mention of a nephew Sir William Arundel.
Sir Richard Arundel, of Wychampton, Dorset, born 1376/80, married
1400-05, Alice ------- (m. 3rdly, Sir John Keighley, of Bansted,
Surrey; died 30 August 1436) [parentage unknown], widow of Roger
Burley, of Burley, Herefordshire (d. 1399), and died 3 June 1419,
having had issue, 1 son and 3 daughters.
A) Henry Arundel [per Douglas Richardson's PA3], - no further
information. If existed, had to have died without issue before 1419.
B) Philippa Arundel, born 1405/6, died without issue, and (apparently)
unmarried before 1465/6.
C) Joan Arundel, born 1407/8, married Sir Thomas Willoughby (d. before
1 July 1439), second son of William, 5th Lord Willoughby, and had
issue, two sons and one daughter. They were ancestors of the later
Lords Willoughby.
D) Eleanor Arundel, born 1409/10, married Sir William St. George (d.
1472), and died 1465/6, having had issue, one son, Thomas, who died
without issue before his mother.
Joan Arundel, married 1st, after 1379, Sir William de Bryan (died
without issue 1395/6), second son of Sir Guy de Bryan. Joan married
2nd, William Echingham, and died after 1401. I don't have any further
information on her.
Margaret Arundel, Lady Ros, lady-in-waiting to Anne of Bohemia, queen
of England, married October 1394 at Sterborough, William, 6th Lord Ros
(born about 1369, died 1 September 1414, Belvoir), and died 3 July
1438, habing had issue, five sons and four daughters. They were
ancestors of the Lords Ros and Earls of Rutland.
There was one additional daughter of Sir John Arundel (d. 1379) and
Eleanor Mautravers:
8. Elizabeth Arundel, a nun at Halliwell (mentioned in the 1392 will of
her nephew John, 7th Lord Ros), and later at Sion (per a mid-15th
century interview with Elizabeth, widow of Sir Edward Arundel of
Aynho).
Hope this helps.
Cheers, --------Brad
I have some further information for you.
Sir John Arundel (born 1347/9, died 15 December 1379), second (not
third) son of Richard Fitzalan, 3rd Earl of Arundel, and his second
wife Eleanor of Lancaster, married 17 February 1359, Eleanor Mautravers
(born about 1345, married 2nd, 9 August 1380, then remarried 29

our loving nephew Sir William Arundel, Knight."
3. Thomas Edward Fitzalan
4. Henry Fitzalan Arundel living 1375
5. Richard Ftitzalan Arundel d 1436 mentioned in will of brother Wm and
grandfather Lord Maltravers
6. Joan fitzlan died 1401 (md first William Bryan d 1395 2nd married
William Echyngham d 1412
Joan Arundel, married 1st, after 1379, Sir William de Bryan (died
without issue 1395/6), second son of Sir Guy de Bryan. Joan married
2nd, William Echingham, and died after 1401. I don't have any further
information on her.
7. Margaret Fitzalan Arundel d 3 July 1438 (Margaraet md William de
Rose KG
