Dear Newsgroup ~

The following lawsuit appears to involve the estate of Thomas de
Blunville (or Blundeville), Bishop of Norwich (died 1236), who is a
known kinsman of Sir Hubert de Burgh (died 1243), Earl of Kent. The
land involved includes various acreage and a mill in Glemham, Suffolk.

The plaintiff in the suit, Robert de Boutun, is identified as the
cousin and heir of Thomas de Blunville. Ralph de Blunville, the
defendant, was Archdeacon of Norfolk and evidently also a near relative
of the Bishop.

Date: Octave of Saint John the Baptist, 1241

"1788. Suff'. Robertus de Boutun' peciit versus Radulfum de Blunvill'
archidiaconum Norf' ducentas xxvij. acras terre et quator libratas et
xix. solidatas redditus et j. molendinum cum pertinentciis in Glemham,
de quibus Thomas de Blunvill' consangwineus ipsius Roberti, cujus heres
ipse est, fuit seisitus in dominico suo ut de feodo die quo obit."

The following biography of Ralph de Blunville, the defendant, is found
in Diana E. Greenway, Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae, 1066-1300, vol. 2
(1971): 64-67.

"Ralph de Blonvilla [?Blundeville].

First certain occ. 7 Nov. 1236, receiving legacy from estate of late
bp., Thomas de Blundeville (d. Aug. 1236), to whom he was therefore
prob. related and by whom he was prob. appd., i.e. before Aug. 1236
(Close R. 1234-37 p. 384). Depr. for pluralism, perhaps before 31 May
1237 (Reg. Greg. IX no. 4738; cf. C.P.R. 1232-47 p. 183), but occ. as
archdcn. of Norfolk 28 July 1237 (C.P.R. 1232-47 p. 190). In dispute
over archdcnry. with Simon the Norman, 4 March 1239 (Reg. Greg. IX no.
4738). Still alive, but not archdcn., 18 Jan. 1245 (Reg. Innoc. IV no.
898)."
