Dear Newsgroup ~

The following descriptions of seals of Sir Hubert de Burgh (died 1243),
Earl of Kent, are found in Walter de G. Birch, Catalogue of Seals in
the British Museum 2 (1892): 258-259:

finely woven hollow bobbin of green taffeta. About 2-1/4 inches when
perfect [Add. ch. 20,407]. Obverse. To the right. In armour: hauberk
of mail, surcoat, sword, shield of arms. Horse caparisoned. Arms:
seven lozenges, three, three, and one vairé (or lozengy of fifteen
pieces) [BURGH]; Reverse. A shield of arms as described in the
obverse. Legend destroyed.

5770. [A.D. 1227-1229]. Dark-green: fine, very imperfect; app. by a
finely woven cord of faded purple taffeta [L.F.C., ii. 12]. Legend
destroyed.

5771. Plaster casts from fine but imperfect impression, the edge
entirely gone [lxxviii.55]. Obverse. To the right. In armour:
hauberk of mail, surcoat of arms: round cap, sword, shield of arms.
Horse caparisoned. Arms as in the reverse. Legend wanting; Reverse.
A kite-shaped shield of arms: masculy or lozengy of nineteen pieces,

the preceding rev., where the mascles or lozenges are only three in
number in the row in chief. Legend wanting.
