Question

Legg inn av Gjest » 12 jan 2006 17:37:53

In researching the de Praers name, I came across the following:
"Presles, which occurs as 'Praelliae' in 1198 and as 'Praeriae' in
1269, lies 9 kil. NE of Vire, an important possession of the earls of
Chester. [Origins of Some Ango-Norman Families]"

There is no Vire in England, but I do find it in Basse-Normandie,
France.

My questions are:
1. Were there any earls of Chester prior to the Invasion of 1066?
2. After the Invasion, did any earls of Chester possess lands on the
continent?

The above quotation makes little sense to me, a relative novice in
medieval genealogy, unless perhaps some earl of Chester held a Praers
in Normandy prior to 1066.

Thanks for any help you may be kind enough to give,

Evergreen/Carol Stokes

To answer your second question first there is charter evidence that
Henry king of the English and Richard earl of Chester gave the church of
Vire to Saint-Martin of Troarn (D.Bates, Regesta Regum Anglo Normannorum,
p 850) so this would be between 1100 and 1120.

Your first question is more difficult but as far as I can tell Cheshire
was part of the jurisdiction of the earl of Mercia before the conquest.
