Edward Stanley, 1st Baron Monteagle, who was instrumental in the slaughter of the Scots at Flodden, had by his second wife, Elizabeth Vaughan, a daughter, Elizabeth.

This Elizabeth Stanley married Sir Thomas Langton, of Newton, Lancashire.

Edward married Elizabeth Vaughan "before 25 November 1501" and their son Thomas was born in 1507. Edward died in 1523.

--------------------------------
John Fleetwood, of Pednwortham, Lancashire, was buried 13 October 1590. In 1567 he married his first wife, Catherine Christmas. I have no idea when Catherine died and when he married his second wife, Joan only daughter of Sir Thomas Langton.

My question is, is Joan Langton, who married John Fleetwood, a daughter (or perhaps granddaughter) of Sir Thomas Langton, of Newton, and Elizabeth Stanley?

With many thanks.

Dear Leo,

According to secondary sources I have seen, she is indeed daughter of
Sir Thomas by Elizabeth Stanley. However, I was a bit concerned that
the new DNB doesn't mention this Elizabeth in its list of Monteagle's
children, which otherwise seems quite comprehensive, and includes both
legitimate and illegitimate issue; maybe this link needs to be
reassessed? I have it noted that the Sir Thomas Langton in question was
aged 6 in 1503 and died 1569, if that's of any use; and his wife
Elizabeth as dying in 1533- which seems rather early, as I haven't got
notice of another wife for him.

All best wishes, Matthew
