lions passant in pale (Birch). S. h. of Sr Reyner de Burgh of Burg
St. Margaret, Norf., and aged c. 25 in 1200. Chamberlain to K. John,
Const. of Windsor and Dover Cas., Warden of Cinque Ports. Seneschal of
Poictou, Justiciar. of England 1215, Regent 1216-27, Earl of Kent 11
Feb. 1227. Died at Banstead, Surr., 12 May 1243 (G.E.C.). Writ for
Inq. of his wid. Margaret d. of William, K. of Scots, 25 Nov. 1269.
She held Bansted Manor as 3 Kt. rices, and Aspele Manor, Beds., the
heir being Sr Jn. de Burgh, of full age (Inq.).

Hatfield Peverel, and Horkeslegh, Ess., Seham, Cambs., Dunstall and
Newton. Kent, Banstead, Surr., Neyland, Suff., Portslade, Suss.,
Aspele, Beds., Kamel, Kingestan, Meleburn and Kingisbury, Som.,
Winfred, Dors., Elnor. Glou., and Wateley, Notts., 29 Jy 1260.
Confirmation Of his ancestors fair at Causton, Suff., and grant of
market at Camel, with fair there and at Wakerle Northants., 12 Sep.
1264 (Cart.R.). Jn. de B. was a rebel. He holds King's Caurnel Manor,
Worth J40 p.a. The E. Warenne seized Portslade Manor. John had also
£40 lands at Cumpton, Warw. (Inq. Mich. 1265) To secure goshawks and
falcons on sale at Yarmouth and Lynn 31 Afar. 1267. He grants lease of
Portslade, manor 20 Nov. 1269 (P.R.). Owes to Jews 8 Nov. 1270 (P.R.).
S. h. of Hubert, E. of Kent. Confirmation of grants by him and his 5.
John of lands to St. Saviour's, Bermondsey, 12 Ap. 1272 (P.R.). He has
sold sine lic. Bensted Manor to Wm. de Appeltrefeud and Saharn Manor
to Thos. de Clare 16 June 1273 (F.R). Gift of 2 deer from Essex Forest
28 Aug. 1273 (C.R.). Made Cont. of Tower of London and of Colchester
Cas.. and Custos of Tendring Hun~ for life. Grant also of £4oo p. a.
from farm of city of London and £200 p. a. from Middleton Hundred. He
gives to K_ in exchange lands in Ess., Suff., Norf., Cambs., Som.,
Dors., Surr.. and Warw., 18 Dec. 1273 (P.R.). Overlord of Hamerton
Manor Hunts., 23 Mar., and of lands in Ess. 3 June 1274 (Inq.). He
held Arneley Manor by gift of X. Hen. III, but gave it by charter to
Rob. Burnell, K's clerk (Cart.R. 6 Oct. 1274). Dead 20 Nov. 1274.
Order to take to K. the manors whereof he had enfeoffed him, and *h.
K. had committed to him for life (F.R.). Writ for his Inq. 1 Dec.
1274. He held Portslade Manor, Hallingbury Manor, Ess., inheritance of
his w. Hawise, Wakerle Manor, and Camel Regis Manor, Som., which last
X. John gave to his f., Hubert de B. He left s. h., Sr John de B., 40
(Inq.). Mentioned as sometime E. of Kent 22 June 1278 (C.R.).

a. h. of John de B.. sen., 1274 (Inq.). S. h. also of Hawise de
Launvale. Livery to him Manors of Kingstane, Wakerle, Waukre,
Hallingbury and Lexinden, wh. his 1. held of her inheritance by
courtesy of England, 5 Feb.1275 ( F.R.). K. gives him 110 m. p.a. from
ferm, of city of London 28 Feb. 1275 (C.R.), and sends him to Norway
to buy falcons and gerfalcons 23 Mar. 1276 (P.R.). Quittance of £100
for his relief and £53 and £40 debts to K. 4 May 1277 (C.R.). Pardon
of trespasses in Essex Forest 6 May 1277. Protection. going over seas
on pilgrimage, 26 May 1277 (P.R.). Sum to serve agst. Welsh for 1 Kt.
Fee in Ess., but makes fine in 30 m. 1 Jy. 1277 (P.W.). Dead 25 Feb.
1280 (F.R.), holding Wakerle manor and advowson of Thingeden.
Northants., Halwenesheye Manor, Som., Lexden and Hallingbury Manors,
Mm, and Portslade Manor, as 10 Kt. Fees, Walkerne Manor, Herts., and
other lands. He left 3 d. coh., viz. Devorguilla w. Of S' Rob Fitz
Walter Hawise w. Of Sr Rob. de Gresley, and Margery, a nun at
Chicksand, all of full age (Inq.). Hawise is to have Wakerle,
Devorguilla to have Hallingbury, Walken, and Lexinden. Margery is a.
nun at Sempringham 25 May 1280 (FA). Hawise was wid. of Rob. de Greyli
10 Nov. 1296 (Inq.).
