Dear John and Douglas,

The Garendon Cartulary can be found transcribed in vol 3 part 2 of John Nichols' "Antiquities of Leicestershire" (1815), the greatest and heaviest of the county histories. There are copies in the PRO library at Kew and in the Leics RO at Wigston Magna, but might be difficult to find in the States. I notice that a CD version can be bought on line from the Leics & Rutland Family History Soc. (http://www.lrfhs.net) - £11 for vol 3 or £44 for the lot. The PRO library would not let me take copies of the relevant pages (because of age of book) but I made a summary of the points most interesting to me which I'll e-mail to you directly.

Apart from the Burton connection, it is clear that these charters refer to the Loughborough Despensers because one charter of Hugo de Berges is witnessed by Hugo Dispensator and his brother Henry, while another refers to "Hugo de Spenser de Lutgborowe." I noticed nothing to suggest that Ralph and Geoff de Loughborough were related to the Despensers.

In case you haven't come across it, there are some interesting references to Elias Despenser in "The Early Records of Mediaeval Coventry" by P R Cross (OUP 1986). This shows that his wife was Alice who was possibly the daughter of a Richard de Smithford and that he had a son Nigel. Both wife and son made gifts to Stoneleigh Abbey.

I look forward, John, to seeing your revised Despenser pedigree.
