Turn again Dick Whittington

On Leo's great website here
http://www.genealogics.org/getperson.ph ... 6&tree=LEO
we see that Leo posts a legend that Dick Whittington married an Alice
alledged dau of Ivo FitzWarin, 2nd Baron FitzWarin.

Part of Ivo's will is posted online and interestingly enough it contains:
1 "I leave to Richard Whityngton, my son..."
and also
2 "Executors Richd. Whityngton, citizen of London, and others."
http://www.berkshirehistory.com/bios/wi ... warin.html

I would say it's hard-pressed to deny that somebody named Richard Whittington
was a son[-in-law] to Ivo based on this will. Now, whether that somebody is
the same person as "Dick Whittington, thrice Lord Mayor of London" I shall
leave to another person to post. But at least this should prove that Ivo did
indeed have another daughter, and so that should constitute an addition to
genealogics.

In line with the evidence you post, in past discussions I think it's been
concluded that Ivo's daughter really did marry Dick Whittington, although
their marriage had no issue.

Dear Will ~

You might wish to consult the various charters regarding Whittington's
College and Hospital which are published in William Dugdale, Monasticon
Anglicanum, 6 Pt. 2 (1830): 738-747. Among the documents is a charter
which specifically names the parents of Sir Richard Whittington of
London as Sir William Whittington and Joan his wife, and those of Sir
Richard's wife, Alice, as Sir Ives Fitz Waryn and Maud his wife.

You can view Dugdale online at the following weblink:

The marriage of Sir Richard Whittington, Mayor of London, and Alice
Fitz Warin, is no legend.

Those who have been following the 'Dick' Whittington saga may like to read
the following extract from a document in the Guildhall library:-

"On Thursday 30 July 1422 Rob[ert] Chechele (the Mayor) sent for the masters
and 12 of the most worthy of the company to appear at the Guildhall, to whom
John Fray, the Recorder, objected a breach of covenant, for which £20 should
be forfeited for selling dear ale. After much altacation on the price and
quality of malt, Richard Whityngtone declared that the Brewers had hidden
[it] in the country and forestalled the malt to raise its price, they were
convicted in the said penalty and the masters were ordered to be kept in
prison in the Chamberlain's custody until they should pay it or find surety
for the payment. When the Mayor and Aldermen had gone homeward to their
meat, the masters went [and] asked the Chamberlain & Clerk what they should
do, who bid them go home providing that no harm should come to them, for all
this proceeding had been done but to please Richard Whityngtone, for he was
cause of all the foresaid Judgement."

I assume that Richard was suffering from a hang-over!

All the best

Adrian Fray
