Hi all
I am interested in a line supposedly leading from John Lord Cobham,
1447-1512 and Margaret Nevill. Their second son is said, in the "Brook
family record" 1927 by Anna Cawthra, to have been George Brocke b abt
1469 and to have m Elizabeth Peche of Lullingstone as her second
husband (firstly to John Hart).
Their son John b abt 1497 m Agnes Wiseman
Their son William b 1525 m Margery Bedell
their daughter Mary b 1567 m John Reeve
their son Jeremiah is my interest, however their daughter Anna m Thomas
Fitch and several of their sons were amongst the first settlers to
Connecticut. One, Reverend James Fitch has been particularly well
documented by John T Fitch.
Does anyone have any other information concerning Lord Cobham's family,
or information about the Peche family origins in Lullingstone? - this
second question has arisen before in this group but I am unaware of any
conclusions there might have been.
Best wishes
Geoff

Dear Geoff,
You have touched on a possible ommission in CP, that is why I also send it
to Chris Phillips.
This family is not very easy to establish properly.
Burke's Extinct Peerage 1866 only gives the main senior line.
Do you have access to Cahiers de Saint Louis? On page 949 we find Margaret
Nevill, died 30 September 1506, buried at Cobham and married to John Brooke,
7th Baron Cobham.
They had 18 children !!! Only a few are named :
1.Thomas, 8th Lord Cobham
2.Edward
3.George
4 to 8 "girls"
9. Mary
10.Dorothy
11 Faith
12 to 18 "girls"
By George we find no dates, but he married Elizabeth Peche, daughter of
William Peche and widow of John Hart. There is then a reference to Thomas
8th Lord Cobham (which I will give) and a question "without posterity ?" It
is only a question, Cahiers de Saint Louis is not certain.
Thomas Brooke, 8th Lord Cobham,
lots of details but
he married (3) Elizabeth Hart, she died 31 March 1552, daughter of John Hart
and Elizabeth Peche, mentioned before. There were no children from this
marriage.
The Complete Peerage Volume III page 347, does not give parents for
Elizabeth Hart, and also maintains she was alive on 31 March 1552 even if
Cahiers maintains she died that day
Hope this helps a little.
Best wishes

My distant cousin, Cece Bibby, told me several years ago that Gary Boyd
Roberts said the Fitches of Connecticut might have a remote royal
descent. I wonder if this is what he was thinking of ... I believe
the brother of John Brock (who m. Agnes Wiseman) married the widow of a
de Vere Earl of Oxford (going from memory; could someone check CP?), so
perhaps it is not *utterly* implausible ...

John Brock b abt 1536, (son of John who m Agnes Wiseman and brother of
William m Bedell) m Anne Vere, dau of John de Vere 15th Earl of Oxford
and widow of Edmund Lord Sheffield.
I too had noted that somewhere one of the Connecticut Fitches claimed
that Anna nee Reeve had claimed Royal descent but dismissed it as
unprovable and did not make a note of my source!

Oh, yeah, she was a Vere by birth, Lady Sheffield by marriage. Either
