Some time ago, I attempted to list the owners/holders of Wark-on-Tweed, is
it is of interest. I might have posted this a while ago

In 1174 William the Lion failed to take the castle.

_Robert de Ros_ (1169?-1226?) (aka Furfan/Furson); ward of Ranulf de
Glanville; One of the most vigorous of the Magna Carta barons and as a result king
John is said to have burnt Wark; Robert fortified Wark which he gave to yr
son; m at Haddington 1191 Isabel wdw of Robert the Brus and base d of William
the Lion, king of Scotland

_Sir Robert de Ros_ (-?1269) of Wark on Tweed; yr son; In 1255 he was
heavily fined, imprisoned and land seized following complaints made by Margaret of
Scotland but by 1259 found not guilty and restored; m (possibly his m2)
Christine d of Bertram and sister and in her issue coh of Roger Bertram [CP Vol
II: Roger Bertram’s wife was Ida. Chritian m1 NN de Penulbury (leaving Elias de
P), m2 Sir Robert de Ros of Wark, who d in 1275, but Vol XI p 120 this s/b
the Robert de Ros who died in c1269, also Vol XI has m1 Sir Robert de Ros m2
Robert de Penbury, from subnotes Vol XI is more likley to be correct]

William (anc of Ros of Kendal) who had been sent troops by the king to defend
Wark; The king occupied Wark before a successful campaign in Scotland;

life interest in manor of Wark was enlarged to a grant in fee with remainder

her issue coh of her nephew Thomas 4Ld Grandison

Salisbury; conspired to murder Henry IV; in 1400/1 attainted (reversed 1461) m
(<1384) Maud (-1424) wdw of John (his m2 - he was mayor of London 1339/40 and
1351) s of Andrew Aubrey (-1380/1) and wdw of Sir Alan Buxhall (-1381) of
Sussex etc and d of Adam Francis mayor of London 1352-4 by Agnes d&ch of William

Thomas Montague (c1388-1428 France, dspm bur Bisham); all that his father
had held was restored to him but the ownership of Wark seems to have ended with
his grand-father, which would seem to be in accordance of the 1329 grant;
4Er; m1 (<1400) Eleanor (->1413 bur Bisham) 3d of Thomas de Holand Er of Kent
by Alice d of Richard FitzAlan Er of Arundel and, in 1408 coh of her brother
Edmund Er of Kent; m2 <1424 Alice (-1475) wdw of Sir John Philip (-1415) and
d&h of Thomas Chaucer by Maud d&ch of Sir John Burghersh. His wdw m3 1430
William de la Pole Earl (later Duke) of Suffolk


_Ralph de Neville_ (c1364-1425) 1Er Westomrland; Held Wark in the period Feb
1396/7-Sep 1398; m1 (possibly in childhood) Margaret (-9 Jun 1396) d of Hugh
de Stafford 2Er Stafford by Philippe d of Thomas de Beauchamp Er Warwick; m2
(<29 Nov 1396) Joan (formally Joan de Beaufort) wdw of Sir Robert Ferrers
and d of John of Gaunt Duke of Lancaster by his m3 Katherine, wdw of Sir Hugh
Swynford and d of Sir Payn Roet

Perhaps Ralph acquired Wark as a result of his m2, as both are approximately
the same date.


_Sir Thomas Grey_ (1326-1400) of Heton and Wark; s of Sir Thomas Grey
(-1369) of Heton by Margaret d&h of William de Pressene of Presson,
Northumberland; In 1398 obtained castle, manor and lordship of Wark in exchange for other
property from Ralph Earl of Westmorland (and, no doubt, in consideration of
his sons marriage); In 1399 Sir Thomas had his house burnt and his Castle
walls pulled down (don't know why he did this); m Joan (->1402)

_Sir Thomas Grey_ (1384-1415); of Heton and Wark; On 8 Aug 1415, after his
death, his lands were forfeited, those in fee simple granted to his younger br
Sir John, those in fee tail (which would seem to include Wark) in the keeping
of his brother John presumably until Sir Thomas' heir became of age; m
Alice d of Ralph Neville (-1425)1Er Westmorland by his m1 Margaret Stafford (see
above) She m2 Sir Gilbert Lancaster.

*This Elizabeth was also heir of her uncle Sir John Marmion (formerly Grey)
and eventual heir of her mother Lora and of her aunt Elizabeth d of Sir
Herbert de St Quintin
Battle: 1435 (10 Sep) Piper Dene 2 miles south Wark; Earl of Angus beat Earl
of Northumberland & Sir Robert Ogle

_Sir Ralph Grey_ (c1432-?); of Chillingham; m Jacquetta.
In 1460 Wark castle destroyed by the Scots;

_Sir Edmund Grey_ (c1477-1533); of Chillingham; m Ann d of Thomas Gower of
Stainsby by Constance Forster
In 1513 Wark it was taken by King James IV of Scotland but, in 1517 Lord
Dacre claimed £480 for its restoration and in 1523 the Earl of Surrey described
it as the strongest thing I have ever seen and it subsequently held out
against Albany's guns

John Carr of Hetton was keeper of the castle 1538-1551; In 1547 Wark was the
base for Somerset's Scottish invasion; It is reported that Sir Ralph Grey
does nothing at Wark, but suffer it to decay

_Sir Ralph Grey_; of Chillingham; m1 Jane d of William Ardington of
Ardington, Berks
In 1580 some of the buildings were so shaky that no man dare dwell in them;
In 1592 Sir Ralph Grey had finished the water wall repairs.

_William Grey_ (-1674); of Chillingham; Baronet (cr 1619); Baron Grey of
Warke (cr 11 Feb 1623/4); m 1619 Cecilia/Priscilla (-bur 1667/8 Epping) d&ch of
Sir John Wentworth of Gosfield, Essex by Catherine d of Sir Moyle Finch Bt.
The Stuarts allowed Wark to decay and in 1639 declared worse than useless
for defence.
