Following the recent debat about Poitiers and Poitou, something
I found this week.

Geneve and Genevois, Die and Diois. In both cases, the town that gave
her name to the area was not included in the said area (at least not
always).

So the count of Genevois had no control over the town of Geneve and
the count of Diois was not the owner of the town of Die. It seems in
those cases, the "owner" of the town was the bishop.

I presume you will find many more similar examples.
