Dear MichaelAnne, Merilyn, Tony, David, et al.,

Jane, wife of Thomas de Eland (d. bef 6 Dec 1354) and ancestress
of the Saviles of Eland, Thornhill, & c., is identified in the Eland
pedigree (HSP, Vis. Yorkshire) as the widow of Robert Conyers.
Reference to her, and possible leads in pursuing her surname and
ancestry, is given in the following record for the year 1343:

' Wardship of Margaret, daughter of Robert son of Thomas de
Conyers, granted to Thomas Eland and Joan, his wife, 418.' [1]

Having not previously studied the Conyers pedigree, I note
one certain reference in the National Archives (UK) site to Robert
de Conyers, of Hutton Conyers, dated 10 Edw. II (1306/07) [2].

Interestingly, one contributor to the IGI has identified the
wife of Robert Conyers as Joan Mallory (on what basis I know not).
If this is correct, and the details concerning the Mallory and
Conyers families are slightly in error (Sir Christopher Mallory
marrying a sister of Robert Conyers, and not a daughter as
claimed [3]), a pair of brother-sister marriages may be the answer:

[NOTE: the following chart is conjectural in part;
additional direct evidence is required to confirm.]

Sir Thomas = Thomas = Isabel
Mallory I Conyers I
_______________I_______________ I _______________
I I I
I _________________I ___ I
I I I I
Christopher = Joan 1) Robert = Joan = 2) Thomas
Mallory I Conyers Conyers I Mallory I de Eland
I (heiress of dspm I I
I Hutton bef 1344 I I
I Conyers) _______I I_____
V I I
Margaret Sir John = Isabel de
Conyers Savile I Eland
(dsp ?) I
V

The above would appear to work better with what evidence I have
found as noted above, esp. with Robert Conyer’s daughter being
named Margaret, and not being the Conyers heiress Joan.

Should anyone have relevant documentation, comment or
criticism, that would be most welcome.

Meanwhile, my best wishes to all for a Merry Christmas
(and/or Happy Hanukkah).

Cheers,

John *
