The Parentage of Anne, wife of Roger Lewkenor of Tangmere, Sussex

Over the past several years, many researchers, including myself, have
been working on the ancestry of Rose (Stoughton) Otis of Dover, New
Hampshire. To date, her ancestry has been proven back to Roger
Lewkenor, Esquire of Tangmere, Sussex [see Douglas Richardson, Magna
Carta Ancestry (Baltimore, MD: GPC, 2005), pp. 782-3 and the sources
cited therein]. A royal line was proposed by myself and was published
at Roberts, Gary Boyd, The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants to the
American Colonies or the United States (Genealogical Publishing Co.,
Baltimore, 2004), pp. 376. This line depends upon two sources:
Visitation of Sussex, pp. 59-60 and Sussex Genealogies: Lewes Centre
compiled by John Comber (Cambridge, W. Heffer & Sons, 1933), pp.
148-158.

However, the time line for this descent is strained to say the least.
According to Douglas Richardson "Plantagenet Ancestry: A Study in
Colonial and Medieval Families" (Genealogical Publishing Co.,
Baltimore, 2004), pp. 402, Reynold West, the 6th Lord La Warre had no
children by his second wife Elizabeth Greyndour. Therefore, all his
children must be born before 24 November 1433. So a daughter born to
this couple even in 1433, is not likely to be a mother to a son having
his own children in the late 1520s through 1540s. This is why this
line did not appear in PA3.

A review of all pertinent wills, IPMs, monumental inscriptions for the
people involved has been undertaken without a smoking gun appearing to
prove a solid relationship. I'm out of ideas on how to proceed. I
believe that Anne was the daughter of Richard West, the 7th Lord La
Warre and his wife Katherine Hungerford. This theory preserves the
essence of the Visitations, that is, that Anne was a West and it merely
muddles the generations. Richard and Katherine West's children were
born in the 1450s-1470s. This makes the time line work much better.
It also shows why:

1. Roger Lewkenor leaves lavish gifts to Lord and Lady La Warre is his
will [PCC 26 Bennett, LDS Film #91906]. No relationship is mentioned.
His wife is clearly called Anne in this will.

2. Edmund Lewkenor is called kinsman in the will of Thomas La Warre,
the 8th Lord La Warre. Thomas in the same will calls two of his
granddaughters "kinswoman" as well, so the nearness or distance of
the relationship indicated by the use of the term kinsman is impossible
to determine.

3. Edmund names sons both Richard and Thomas.

Unfortunately, neither Richard West, nor his wife Katherine leave wills
that are now extant. Two of their other known children, Richard West
and Nicholas Strelley, the husband of their daughter Katherine are
extant, but do not mention the Lewkenors. The monumental inscriptions
for Roger and Anne Lewkenor at the Boxgrove Priory no longer exist.
The IPMs are published for this time period for all the people involved
and they shed no light on this problem.

I hope someone can point me in the direction of new avenues of research
in order to solve this problem.
