Hundred Rolls of 1274 - 1276

Can someone explain the origin and purpose of the hundred rolls. Were these
census or tax list? ( or other?) They appear to be part of the
administrative changes introduced by Edward I. Are they the first "offical" court
documents to be written in English? Who was required to be included when a
"roll" was taken? Many thanks. Jerry.
