Good Evening All,
Some history with the genealogy, between 1093-94, there were three
charters, 2 by Roger-1 by Roger thru Godfrey the Sheriff, Chartulary
258,260 and 266. Two were dated 1094, the third was undated and was the
original founding charter as it is "The ONLY ONE that appears in the
Register of the Priory).
B.M. Harl. MS. 3764, fol. 1a, Lanc. Pipe Roll 289 and the rest of the
register by W.O. Roper in Material for The History of the Church of
Lancaster (Chet. Soc.), 8 Add.MS. 32107, Nos. 818-86 and Exch. Aug. Off.
Misc. Bks. vols. 33-40 and include some which are not in the register.

I posit the reason that Godfrey the sheriff is on both witness lists other
than being alive is that
1. other than being the local sheriff
2. other than being an under-tenant to Roger
3. that it was he thru Roger in 1093 that granted
with Rogers consent the churches of Walton-on-Hill and Kirkham to the
abbey of St. Peter of Shrewsbury, the chief English foundation of of his
father, Roger of Montgommerii, that he (Roger) had previously given to the
priory of Lancaster.
The explanation being given, that, for the double grant and future
litigation between the Abbey at Lancaster and Shrewsbury as has been
previously alluded to, is that "he had re-taken into his own hands again
some of the estates held of him by Godfrey the sheriff when the Shrewsbury
charter had been drawn up". And would explain a number of different ways
of, Godfrey the sheriff, as witness.
Alien House, The Priory of Lancaster, British History Archives.

The other witness on the first list on our posts; that of Albert
Greslet(later Grelley) was also an under-tenant, and his ancestor in 1232
Thomas who obtained an 'assize of darrein presentment' against the priory
and obtained the advowson of childwall church held of the priory at
Lancaster, in whose barony of Manchester Childwall belonged, as I
understand it.

Further it is surmised that the reason King Henry I, had to confirm the
charters in 1131/2 is because on Rogers forfeiture in 1102 the the
advowson of Preston and Pulton resumed to the crown.
Lancashire Pipe Roll 293-4

It is curious the Theobald Walter, in 1196, did succesfully win his
litigation against the Abbey at Lancaster, of Preston and Poulton and of
Kirkham in Shrewsbury against St. Peters' based on the concept that
because of the 1102 forfieture the charters were invalidated. Curiously it
was on the churches/cells and not the vill's, as the Seez still maintained
that at least in Poulton, But there obviously was confusion as to why
litigation with Theobald Walter transpired.
Final Conc. (rec. Soc Lancs & Ches.)-Final Conc. i,2.

I add this as further conceptual evidence towards the charter of 1130, as
not a forgery or embellisment, but as a confirmation and re-granting of
lands and gifts with new witnesses and Godfrey the Sheriff.
Best Regards,
Emmett
