Cities and Counties

Talking about double Dutch--- In The Netherlands is the province of Groningen with as capital a city called Groningen. I was born in the province of Utrecht and the capital of this province is also called Utrecht. Utrecht, as Ultrajectum, was founded by the Romans.

With these two, never mind what the Latin says, they translate both, the city and the county, to the same and you have to know what is being talked about. The Bishop of Utrecht was bishop of the province (county which included the city).

When we talk about Poitou and Poitiers, a county and a city, which have different names and, again, when translating from Latin, you have to know what you talk about. And especially as there are two different words, the correct one has to be chosen. Roger had a nickname and he had a family name, he was a count, but he was not Count of Poitou or Poitiers, not even Count of Montgommery (his family name), he was count of La Marche.

Just because a usually reliable source makes an obvious error, do you copy it? Or if you start to understand what is going on, do you stick to your original erronous opinion?

Do you have a contemporary source in which Roger uses the title, Count
of La Marche?

Dear Leo ~

Do you have a contemporary source in which Roger calls himself Count of
La Marche?

What has that got to do with him being called Count of Ponthieu or Poitou?
Your "Comtemporary Source" seems to have been flawed as a kind of
falsification---are you still standing by that?

I'm not standing on anything unless it has a foundation in original
contemporary medieval records.
