Gifford-Joyliffe transaction

Back in 2004, I mentioned that Gifford leased property to Mr. John
Jolliffe or Joyliffe --

Smith, _Colonial American Doctresses_, pp. 47-48,

"On 13 September 1675, 'John Jefford (also Gefford) of Line, merchant'
leased for L60 forty acres of woodland near Bass River in Essex County
to John Joliffe of Boston for 995 years. Margaret also signed" [_Essex
Antiquarian_, 9 (1909):112-13, citing Suffolk Co. Deeds, 9:270].

See http://tinyurl.com/8gfoe (first part of 270 seems to be missing,
however).

It looks like Gifford got the property from John Williams of Bristol,
England, one of those in the Dodsworth-Eaton-Wright-Williams group who
took legal action against Mr. Gifford (see _Records & Files of the
Essex County Quarterly Courts_).

Jno Gefford & a seale
Margerett Gefford & a seale

Does that mean Margerett had her own seal ... or did she merely use her
husband's?

A seal in this period can either be heraldic or notarial.
