Can anyone identify a Jordan Comyn who witnessed two confirmation charters
of Alexander II of Scotland to St. Kentigern in Glasgow. Both charters are
dated July 23rd at Edinburgh and are chronologically between year 11 and year 12
[ 1225-1226] of Alexander's reign. Both charters are also witnessed by
William Comyn, earl of Buchan [1st witness in each] and Walter Comyn whose
signature appears next to Jordan Comyn's. The other witnesses include Thomas de
Lundin, Thomas de Hay and Robert St. Clair.

Dear James,

It seems logical based on the witnesses and the order in which they appear
in both charters. Thanks for all you input and ideas. I will see if he is
mentioned in other documentation of the period.

Dear Michael Anne,
Interesting. Alan Young`s The Comyns 1212-
1314 doesn`t mention a Jordan Comyn and gives no siblings to Earl William of
Buchan. given the date it is possible that this Jordan was a younger brother and
cousin. William`s father Richard is given brothers William, Walter and Osbert
according to the Comyn family charts on pp x-xi. I notice that Idonea a
daughter of William Comyn`s by Marjorie, Countess of Buchan was married to Gilbert de
la Haye, a probable relative of Thomas de la Haye of the charters and Thomas
de Lundin is quite possibly the royal Door Ward (Durward), Alan Durward`s
father who survived until 1231.

Dear MichaelAnne,
I`ve neglected the obvious. Jordan Comyn was
probably William`s second son and the Walter is the future Lord of Badenoch and
Jure Uxoris Earl of Mentieth, the Comyn family`s next political leader. Sarah
filia Roberti, William Comyn`s 1st wife died between 1204 and 1212 and William
was born prior to 1179, the date of his father`s death.

If Jordan is listed before Walter, who subsequently had Badenoch,
surely we might expect him to be senior to him. If he was an uncle and
therefore a younger brother of Earl William, he would be junior to
Walter. So he is probably the son next eldest before Walter, ie of the
first wife, even the eldest son of all, and presumably died early
without issue.

The name Jordan is quite unusual and might give some clues as to
ancestry, perhaps??

Dear Alex,
Jordan is an unusual name as You say. I think it may have
been borne by certain twelveth / thirteenth century Counts of Edessa. there
was a second Jordan Comyn, son of the Bishop of Offally in Ireland in 1305 who
conducted some vicious acts againest the O` Connors. the most probable reason
for the name was the Crusader influence prevalent in Europe around this time.
