Earlier this year, Todd Whiteside posted some material relevant to the
Fosters of Iden in Sussex. I have a few notes on them, and in the hope
they may be of interest or use somewhere, present them now.

In the pedigree of Monke in the 1634 Visitiation this family is called
"the house [of Foster] of Houghton in Sussex".

There are many Fosters in the Burwash parish registers, amongst whom
the forename of Goddard remained popular for some two centuries.

Abstracts of two further family wills:

(1) Goddard Foster of Iden, PCC 1574

4b. Susan Foster, married Sir Thomas Foster, judge and had issue [Sir
Robert Foster (1589-1663), Lord Chief Justice, father of Sir Thomas
Foster of Egham].

I believe this couple is ancestral to Richard Townley of New Jersey,
descended from Townley of Littleton, Surrey (maybe someone with access
to Gary's book could check?) ...

Could well be: various sites (FWIW) state that a Catherine Foster
married a Francis Townley of Littleton, c1596. However, I don't have
such a marriage in the notes available to me at present.

I remember seeing someplace that the Catherine Foster who married the
Townley in the New Jersey immigrant's line was the daughter of a judge
and that her mother was *also* a Foster ...

You have a good memory, John! I had a quick glance at my DNB extracts,
and I don't think Sir Thomas Foster has an entry (although he may in
the ODNB, as I am surprised he doesn't feature); his son Sir Robert
certainly does, but it may not mention Catherine, whom I take to be his
putative sister.

I descend from a branch of the Fosters who settled in the early 17th
century at Stone in Kent, hence my tangential interest.

I know that Dugdale's 1664/5 Lancashire Visitation states that
Catherine (Foster) Townley's father was a judge. Maybe that's a start

Good catch and nice confirmation - well done.

Going from memory here ... I'd add that as Catherine (Fo[r]ster)
Townley's sister Susan (wife of Thomas Brooke) appears to be ancestral
to a Maryland immigrant, this may support Gary's claim for some
Townleys in Maryland (also descendants of Catherine [Foster/ Forster]
Townley, if I'm remembering correctly).

A serendipitous post, with its reference to Surtees' work on Durham: I
was just wishing I could get out from storage (for the purposes of
determining whether it had any light to shed on the erstwhile
Orm-Gospatric-Ketel &c &c threads) my original copy of Dugdale's

they previously belonged to none other than H. Conyers Surtees and bear
