Good Morning All,
I know there are many Gospatricks,a few Orms and Thomas' as regarding the
founding of abbeys and charters and this appears by location and name to
be of the same family.

Shap Abbey in Shap parish was founded for the monks of the
Praemonstaresion order in 1119 at Burton-in-Kendal by Thomas son of
Gospatrick. It was originally at that time near Burton-in-Kendal and moved
near Heppe in 1201 and grants to the abbey confirmed by Robert de Vipont.
Shap Parish historical data:
http://www.stevebulman.f9.co.uk.Cumbria/shap.html

Shap abbey was founded in the honor of St. Mary Magedelen(right time
period for this)at Preston "by Thomas son of Gospatrick and by him endowed
with divers land and among other things he gave the Canons here as much
wood as they would take out of his woods and to grind at his mill toll
free. The said Thomas gave them also pasture in and about Swinendale for
sixty cows, twenty mares and five hundred sheep with other possession in
the territory of Heppe(where it was relocated approx. 1201 due to
proximity of land) where he erect this convent a-new" Robert de Vipont
confirmed all his gifts".

Speed es Lel (?)
1. This could be mis-interpretation of date by early writers.
2. There could be another Thomas son of Gospatrick
3. This could be the one but casts doubts on many timelines as to confer,
he would have had tobe of age that puts his birth pre 1100 if the above
date of 1119 is correct., but then again we are finding many things that
do not with this particular group of families that hitherto had been
accepted as set in stone more-or-less.
4. Could have been a series of transcribing errors and typos, one would
think that things would have been confirmned but the British Archives does
basically follow this same time frame and set of data.
For what it is worth and hope does not cause to much confusion. I notice
in my charters of previous couple of posts, the mention of Jordan de
Lancaster was not picked up and of Warin son of Gilbert de lancastre was
not pickead up, based on charters as witnesses and historically
documented work appear to be hither-to unknown sons but helps in the time
line and the descent of this family.
Of note Gilbert fitzReinfrid had a sister Christina that married Sir
Walter de Castlecarok of Stirkland (later Strickland), married later down
the land to the Brus family .
Best Regards,
