An item that recently came to light thanks to Google Print appears to
shed some light on the career of Thomas Underhill, ancestor of the
Lawrence families detailed by David L. Greene in 'The Royal Ancestry of
the Ipswich (Massachusetts) and Long Island Lawrence Families'.

From 'The Oxford History of the Laws of England',by Sir John Baker, P.
450

'[L]egal education was by no means exclusive to the nobility and
gentry. The title of gentleman was bestowed on all entrants to the
inns, thereby confusing social origins for the historian; and yet it is
known that yeomen could in fact gain admission. Thus Thomas Underhill,
yeoman, went from his inn of chancery to Lincoln's Inn on becoming
clerk of the juries in 1474; and either he or his son became
armigerous.'

The footnote to this reads:
'C67/48/24 (described as gentleman alias yeoman in pardon, 1471); BBLI,
i. 75; arms on brass at Great Thurlow, Suffolk (1508).'

The time frame and the mention of Great Thurlow make me think that this
refers to the Lawrence ancestor who is mentioned in connection with
Great Thurlow in a couple of of medieval charters, as is his
father-in-law Henry Caldebeck.
