In no one of the contemporay documents (included his testament) was
Bonifacio called "marchio "Vadensis" (nor "marchio Savonensis") , but
always marchio "de Vasto" or "de Guasto". No "comitatus savonensis"
ever existed, but only the "comitatus Vadensis", one of the comitati
of the marca aleramica.

The most probable origin of this denomination (in medieval latin
Wastum or Gastum mean empty and deserted spaces) is connected to the
diploma granted to marchio Aleramo from emperor Otto I (Ravenna, March
967). In this it is written "omnes illas cortes in DESERTIS LOCIS
consistentes a flumina Tanard usque ad flumen Urbam ..."

Probably all the aleramian lines, included the anselmian one, were
collectively recognized as "stirps vastensis" in connection to the
only possessions guaranteed by an imperial diploma.
