_The Essex Antiquarian_ ( http://tinyurl.com/97vj3 ) prints the 1637
will of John Spencer of Newbury, Mass. The will mentions "the children
of my brother Nicholas Kidwell," as well as "the children of my sister
Rachel Kidwell." The extracted IGI shows the following baptisms, which
may be a good clue to the origin of Spencer:

Kingston upon Thames, Surrey

Rachell Kidwell, dau. of Robert, bapt. 10 Feb. 1605
Rachell Kidwell, dau. of Nicklas, bapt. 11 Feb. 1638

(other Kidwell and Spencer baptisms).

He mentions his cousin Anne Knight of Newbury (my ancestress several
ways), as well as the children of his cousin Gardner (would this
possibly be the Gardners of Salem?).

Don't know who this particular Anne Knight was, actually. My ancestor,
Anne (Langley) (Ingersoll) Knight, was still married to Mr. Ingersoll
in 1637 (though there *are* a lot of Langley baptisms at Kingston upon
Thames).

The will of Robert Kidwell, gent, of Kingston upon Thames, Surrey,
proved PCC 12 May 1643, may give further clues.

Yep, that seems like a likely clue to follow up.

The English connections of these Spencers & Kidwells
were found long ago.
See Waters, Genealogical Gleanings in England,
vol. i, 467 and 553.
