Dear Newsgroup ~

Back in 2002, there was a discussion on the newsgroup regarding an item
dated 1458-59 in the published abstracts of various deeds and documents
relating to Tattershall Church and College, which item reads as
follows:

"There is a reference to 'Dominus le Gray de Codnor, - Pole et
Grymesby, qui disponsaverunt filias Radulphi Moton, militis."
[Reference: Report on the MSS of Lord de L'Isle & Dudley Preserved at
Penshurst Place 1 (Hist. MSS. Comm. 77) (1925): 192].

This item has been taken by Complete Peerage, 6: 131, to mean that
Henry Grey, Lord Grey of Codnor, married (2nd) Margaret, one of the 3
daughters of Sir Ralph Moton. However, Moton family records published
in Trans. Leicestershire Arch. Soc. 17 (1932-33): 94-144 prove that
Reginald (not Ralph) Moton, Esq. (died 1445), of Peckleton,
Leicestershire, had two daughters and co-heiresses, Anne and Elizabeth,
who married William Grimesby, Esq., and Ralph Pole, Esq., respectively.
There was no daughter who married Henry Grey, Lord Grey of Codnor.

Whatever the situation, the following Chancery lawsuit has been located
which curiously enough mentions Henry Grey, William Grimesby (wife
Anne), and Ralph Pole (wife Elizabeth) all in the same record:

Chancery Proceeding, C 1/26/137 - Henry lord Grey, William Grymesby,
esq., and Anne his wife, Ralph Pole, esq., and Elizabeth his wife. v.
Lawrence Barkeley, knt.: Supposed detention of John Colnell, a minor,
whose father held lands, &c. of petitioners in Swinstead, Lincolnshire
by knight's service. Dated: 1386-1486. END OF QUOTE.

Presumably Henry Grey, Lord Grey, and the two Moton sisters were joint
plaintiffs in the above lawsuit as co-heirs to property inherited from
their common ancestor, Sir Ralph Basset (died 1378), Lord Basset of
Sapcote. This common kinship is probably the same reason that the
plaintiffs, Grey, Grimesby, and Pole, are named together in the
Tattershall Church and College item cited above.

For further particulars of the Moton-Basset descent, please see Trans.
Leicestershire Arch. Soc. cited above; John Nichols, Hist. &
Antiquities of Leicestershire 4(2) (1811): 870 (Moton and Vincent
pedigree); and Douglas Richardson, Magna Carta Ancestry (2005):
687-688.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
