Parentage of Anne (d. 1444), Wife of Edward Tyrell, of Downh

Group,

Brad Verity posted a query on 10 April of last year regarding the latest research into the ancestry of Anne, wife of Edward Tyrell.

As I didn't see any response to him, and as I am interested in the latest on this as well, I'll repeat the question.

I note, incidentally, that Douglas Richardson's Plantagenet Ancestry under Dade (pg 252) uses the Pashley line, but I wasn't aware that any of the references had assigned the definitive maiden name to Anne.

Perhaps I missed something?

Take care,

Kelly Leighton in RI

Has there been any recent research or discussion as to the parentage
of Anne (d. 1444), who married first, John Bassingbourne, and second,
Edward Tyrell of Downham, Essex, son of Walter Tyrell and Eleanor
Flambard?

John Stuart, posted way way back in 1998:

You may have noticed that I made extensive reference to a book entitled "The
Tyrells of England" by O. F. Brown (OFB), published 1982 by Phillimore & Co.
Ltd. in my lengthy post last week regarding the "Missing Period." OFB has
been described by various posters to Gen-Medieval as being the most
authoritative work available on the Tyrells.

The reason for this communication is that OFB does not show the spouse of
Edward Tyrell, son of Walter Tyrrell and Alianor [Flambard], who died in 1442
as being Anne, daughter of Robert Pashley and Philippe Cergeaux. Rather, OFB
shows Edward's wife as Anne, daughter of Sir William Lysle. OFB's cited
source for this conclusion is the will of Edward Tyrell from "Register of
Henry Chichele," Vol. II, p. 628.

OFB's discussion of this will (on pages 88 and 89) focuses primarily on
Edward's children and his parents, but does mention Edward's wife as being
named Anne and as being widow of a first husband named John Bassingbourne.
OFB also shows one of the daughters of Edward and Anne being named Philippa
without naming her spouse. Up to that point, therefore, OFB is consistent
with your post. However, on page 89, there is a chart showing Anne as
daughter of Sir William Lysle and a brief characterization of Sir William as
". . . the presumed father of Anne" and reference to him probably being dead
by 1442, the date of Edward Tyrell's will. OFB also states that Anne only
outlived her husband, Edward Tyrell, by a little more than a year. OFB's
source for this is a writ following her death from Cal. Fin., 20 May 1444.

I copied the will of Edward Tyrell from Chichele's published register.
Luckily it's in English.

First of all, Edward Tyrell describes Sir William Lysle as his
brother: "First I wyll and charge all myn executours that all my due
dettes, of my lady my modur dame Alianore Haulte and of my brother
William Lysle knyght of whos soule Gode have mercy". He mentions
Lysle again: ""...for to syng yerly in the paresh chyrch of Dounham
for to praye for me and Anne my wyff, Waltier Tyrell my fadur and
Alianore hys wyff my modur, Sir John Tyrell and Sir William Lysle
knyghtes, Richard, Tomas and Wylliam my brethern and John Basyngeborne
and for all tho that I am bowndon to praye for and for alle crysten
sowles etc." The final mention is: "Allso my wyll is that Anne my
wyffe have for her parte of my moveable goodes ... ij saltsalers of
sylver that I bought of Sir William Lysle..."

So there does not seem any reason to make Lysle the father of Tyrell's
wife Anne, though it seems quite possible he was her brother, unless
Tyrell had a sister who was married to him.

As the entire royal descent from Edward I for the Cornwallis
descendants of Edward and Anne Tyrell depends on Anne being the
daughter of Philippa Sergeaux Pashley, further research into the Lisle
family seems needed.

Some other facts that can be gleaned from the will:

The forfeiture of the marriage of John Bassingbourne, son of Anne by
her first husband, was being willed by Tyrell to cover expenses, which
suggests John wasn't yet married (I'm somewhat confused by the wording
in the will).

Edward and Anne Tyrell had the following children in 1442:

1) Edward Tyrell, son and heir, underage
2) Philippa Tyrell - no husband mentioned
3) Margaret Tyrell, married to Robert Mounteney, underage, cousin and
heir of Sir William Mounteney, deceased. The young couple was to have
the manor of "Mountnesyng", which had been given to Edward by his
brother Sir John Tyrell, who was also deceased.

Nephews mentioned are Thomas, "Wylliam and Wylliam", who were the sons
of his deceased brother Sir John Tyrell of Heron, Essex (d. 1437),
Speaker, Treasurer of the Household, and Sheriff of Suffolk and
Hertfordshire, by his wife Alice Coggeshall.

The only suggestions from Edward Tyrell of Downham's will that his
wife Anne was a Pashley are that he seemed close to his nephew Thomas
Tyrell, and that John de Vere, Earl of Oxford, was named one of the
surveyors of the will. Thomas Tyrell was married to two different
women from the Marney family, who, along with the Earl of Oxford, were
Sergeaux descendants, and so kin of Tyrell's wife Anne if she was a
Pashley.
