On 18 April 2003, Rosie Bevan initiated a detailed and informative post
about the descendants of Henry de Essex. As part of this, she provided
a stemma summarising her findings:
1.Henry de Essex=Cecily de Valognes d. by 1186
2.Henry de Essex fl.1186, d.s.p.bef 1194
2.Hugh de Essex fl 1194 d. by 1227
3.Henry de Essex d.s.p aft 1254
3.Hugh d.1250
4.Hugh b c.1245 heir of his uncle
5.Baldwin de Essex had issue
?4.Anne=Hamon le Parker
2.Robert, cleric d.s.p.
2.Agnes de Essex b. 1151/2, fl 1206
2.Gunnora de Essex d.s.p.
A certain Hugh de Essex was ancestral to the Bourchier family of Essex,
according (for instance) to Morant's Essex, Vol 2 p 253:
A. Hugh de Essex "descended from a younger son of Henry de Essex".
Issue:
B. Anne de Essex, daughter and heir; married Sir Thomas Prayers.
Issue:
C. Margaret Prayers, daughter and heir; married Robert Bourchier, 1st
Baron Bourchier, Lord Chancellor of England.
Comparing this with Rosie's summary, it is tempting to equate 'my' Hugh
de Essex at A. with 'her' Hugh de Essex at 4. who was born circa 1245
and who was descended from a younger son of Henry de Essex - except
that this Hugh is stated to have had a son, Baldwin, who, Rosie says,
left issue; thus, he could not have had a daughter Anne who was his
heiress.
(Rosie cites various PRO documents cataloguing the activities of
Baldwin de Essex, who was living in 1272, and his presumed descendant
Reynold de Essex, living in 1307.
I do not have any particular chronological details to assist in
identifying 'my' Hugh, other than that his son-in-law, Sir Thomas
Prayers, is said to have died in 1348.
Any ideas?

Re: de Essex family of Essex
Is it known if there is any relationship of the Prayers family of Sible
Hedingham, Essex with the Praers family of Cheshire (Barthomley, Baddiley,
Crewe, Aston Mondram, Checkley, Stoke, Halton, etc.)? Thomas was a name used
among the Cheshire family, but this is such a common name that it is not
indicative of anything.
Thanks.

Not that I know of, but I haven't yet spent much time of the Prayers
family.
Morant adds a few extra details about them:
"In 1309 John de Preers passed by fine to John de Busser the house
later called Bourchier's Hall in Messing" (Vol 2 p 177), and
"Robert de Preyers was father of Thomas de Prayers of Sible Hedingham,
who married Anne, daughter and heir of Hugh de Essex, junior" (ibid p
284)
I have had a look at VCH Essex, but I couldn't spot anything of value
in adding to the above.

This reminds me of one of my 'favourite' amateur genealogy websites,
which shows Robert Bourchier's parents-in-law to be Thomas de Prayers
and Sible de Hedingham...
