By studying CP Volume III page 551 and including the footnotes I found the following line

Haldane, living temp Henry II
/
Hugh de Cronmwell
/
Ralph de Cromwell
/
Ralph de Cromwell
/
Ralph de Cromwell, died before 18 September 1289
married before 26 January 1270/1271 Margaret de Somery
/
Ralph de Cromwell, died before 2 March 1298/99
married ?????
/
Ralph de Cromwell, died before 28 October 1364
married Anice de Bellers
/
Ralph de Cromwell, 1st Baron Cromwell

Richardson, in his Merlay-Somerville-Griffith line, gives

Isabel de Merlay, married before 7 May 1275 Robert de Somerville and two children are mentioned :
1.Philip de Somerville
2.Joan de Somerville, married Ralph de Cromwell, knt, Lineal ancestors of Ralph Cromwell, 1st Lord Cromwell

CP doesn't seem to record any of the Cromwells as knight. Joan Somerville seems to have married the Ralph de Cromwell who died before 2 March 1298/99.

This Ralph was born after "before 26 January 1270/71" and died about 28 years old.
Joan de Somerville's parents married "before 7 May 1275" which is about 23 years before Joan's husband died. This makes Joan a very young widow.

As CP does not give a wife to Ralph de Cromwell who died before 2 March 1298/99, what would be the source for making this Joan de Somerville the wife of _that_ Ralph?

Many thanks.
