Prince Albert -- OT

According to a book review in _National Review_, Nov. 2005,
a new book by Paul Belien called _A Throne in Brussels:
Britain, the Saxe-Coburgs and the Belgianization of Europe_
claims that Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, was a
bastard son of his reputed uncle Leopold I, King of the
Belgians.

Dear Brice,
Do you think this is just mud-throwing or are they giving details?

The womaniser Ernst I Duke of Saxe-Coburg born in 1784, was 33 when he
married Luise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg who was only 16 in July 1817. Eleven
months after the marriage she gives birth to Ernst II (21 June 1818) and
fourteen months after that to Albert (26 August 1819).

Leopold was settled in England after the death of his wife (6 November
1817). Was he on the continent about November/December 1818 to impregnate
his sister-in-law who was almost but not yet 18? At the time Queen Victoria
was born in May 1819 "Leopold had been out of England but was present at the
Christening".

Godfrey and Margaret Scheele in their "The Prince Consort" give a picture of
Luise which to me excludes Leopold as a father, but then how would I know?

"At first she was supremely happy and enchanted with Coburg and Rosenau. In
June 1818 her elder son Ernest was born, followed, on 26 August 1819, by
Albert, in each case with the professional assistance of Dr. Charlotte von
Siebold."
After this the marriage became unhappy, whether due to the relevations
of the Duke's former mistress, Madame Panam, published in 1823 or to the
Duke's relationship with Colonel Szymborski remains unclear. In August 1824
Szymborski proposed to her a partial separation from the Duke. She divorced
the Duke in 1826 and in October 1826 she married Alexander von Hanstein.Even
Dr. Stockmar refered to her gentleness and nobility.

I think they will have to come up with some solid proof, otherwise it will
be seen as a ploy to sell a book.

With best Wishes
