In the past I've posted a few items showing that New England immigrants
Edmund1 Hawes and Edward1 Bromfield were kinsmen, both being
descendants of Mrs. Jane (Whitfield) (Porter) Quinby/ Quimby by
different husbands.

Now, it appears, there may be a third immigrant who is a descendant,
Gov. William Shirley of Massachusetts (1694-1771), the son of William
Shirley, merchant of London, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of John
Godman. The line from Jane Whitfield to William Shirley seems to run
thus ...

Jane Whitfield = (1st marriage to) Richard Porter

Mary Porter = Thomas Godman

Edward Godman = widow Anne Bennett

John Godman = Catherine Townley

Elizabeth Godman = William Shirley

Gov. William Shirley

This seems to be supported by Percy S. Godman, _Some Account of the
Family of Godman_, pp. 34-35, 39-41, 43, 49 (see
http://tinyurl.com/dha5h ).

I believe the NEHGR quotes from an eighteenth-century Shirley will that
mentions some Bromfield kinsmen (I'm not sure if it specifies they were
in New England; can anybody check on that?). Oddly, _RD600_,
discussing the royal descent of Gov. William Shirley, shows his
paternal grandmother to be "___ Oglander." The maternal grandmother of
Edward1 Bromfield was Mary (Oglander) Kempe. Bromfield and Gov.
Shirley may thus be related two ways, through both the Oglander and
Porter families.

If Gov. Shirley does, in fact, share a descent from Jane (Whitfield)
(Porter) Quimby, he would be a fourth immigrant descended from the
Whitfields (along with Hawes, Bromfield, and Rev. Henry Whitfield).

Er, ... should be "through both the Oglander and Whitfield families."

This may apply (from A2A, "Deeds relating to Ote Hall Farm in
Wivelsfield, Hurstpierpoint, etc.") --

Deeds of messuages and land adjoining Wivelsfield Churchyard

FILE - Abstract of title of Sir Thomas Shirley bt - ref. AMS4227 -
date: 1816
[from Scope and Content] Recites in relation to property 1 deeds
from 1 Oct 1630 - Hilary Term 1749 tracing the title from Edward Godman
gent. and his descendants to William Shirley (the property in question
being part of the Oathall estate)

The extracted IGI gives a marriage, "about" 14 July 1664, at St. Benet
Fink, London, of William Shirley to "Ann Oglande." So I guess Gary
could revise "__ Oglander" to "Ann Oglander."

Dear John
I have a Richard Porter (husbandman) in my database, born in Dorset, England
and died after 25th Dec 1688 in Weymouth, Massachusetts. I don't know the
name of his wife, but I have children, Sgt. John Porter from whom I descend
Ruth born in 1639, Thomas and Mary. This Mary married in 1658 John
Bicknell of Weymouth, Mass, as his second wife.
Could this be the Richard Porter who was married to Jane Whitfield? And
could Mary have married Thomas Godman as her first husband?
Best wishes
Merilyn Pedrick

No. I would think you'd see this is impossible (Richard Porter was an
M.P. who died in the late 1570s), but it's sort of interesting you
brought up the Porters of Weymouth (my grandmother, nee Miss Ella
Porter of Merrimac, Mass., was a member of this family).

This webpage shows *some* sort of association between Shirleys and
Bromfields ...
