Good Afternoon,
Good Point on the Neville/Boteler shields. There are many potentials tho
of showing family affiliation and this could be one.
For instance William Boteler of Wem who married Angharad ap Griffith ap
Madoc ap Griffith Maelor,Lord of Bromfield, Dinas Bran and Yale, i.e.
Lower Powis, now co. Denbigh, married 2ndly after Williams Botelers death,
Robert Neville.
Close Roll 12 Edw I m 9, Robert had licence to marry her and did so
6/10/1285, Patent Roll 13 Edward I m 16, or it could be just as easy
showing her descent thru Elizabeth Boteler who married first Thomas
Mollington and 2ndly Robert Ferrars thru their son Sir Robert Ferrars and
Joan Beaufort, altho the Visitation of Hertford the Botelers of Woodhall
shows her father as Ralph, instead of William which I believe is in
error.
As to whether or not they married young? Very Young, that too is a
possibility, they DID have the stature all the way down, on all lines
intermarried; For Instance:
John le Strange,2nd Lord of Blackmere married Ankaret Boteler, dau. of
William Boteler of Wem their son John Le Strange 4th lord of Blackmere
married Mary Fitzalan, dau. of Richard Fitzalan 9th Earl of Arundel and
Isabel de Spencer who was the son of Edmund, 8th Earl of Arundel and Alice
Plantagenet, Richards sister Margaret married William Boteler 2nd Lord of
Wem. Another line, Gilbert Talbot married Ann Boteler of Wem,
daughter of William Boteler of Wem, whose son Richard Talbot married E.
Comyn whose son Gilbert married Petronilla Boteler, daughter of James
Boteler 1st Earl of Ormonde and Ailinor de Bohn, daughter of Humphrey de
Bohn and Elizabeth Plantagenet, daughter of King Edward I (Longshanks and
Leonor Castilla, whose son Richard Talbot married Ankaret le Strange(of
above) who married 2ndly Thomas Neville, Lord Furnivall, whose son John
Talbot married Maud Neville. All these folk were not common gentry!!!
the Dymoke connection, The Kings Champioon?!!
Sir John Dymoke married Margaret Ludlow who was the daughter of Thomas and
Catherine Ludlow who was the son of Sir Thomas Ludlow and Joan Marmion who
was the daughter of Phillip Marmion of Tamworth and Scrivelsby and his 2nd
wife Mary whose family held the honor of The Kings Champion, Joans 1/2
sister by her fathers Phillip Marmions 1st wife, Maud Marmion married
Ralph Boteler son of Ralph Boteler and Maud Pantolf of Oversley and Wem.
As far as young marriages it is Ralph and Maud Marmions grandson's, John
and William, who were married and raised in the d'Argentine household.
Gotta study the Boteler/Butlers, they intermarried and hold the key in
alot of interesting situations.
Best Regards,
Emmett L. Butler
