The joint and sevrall answers of William Felles Edward Truman Thomas Newton
and Richard Taylor defendants to the slanderous and untrue Bill of Complaint
of Edward Ravenscroft Complainant

"which the said complainant havinge knowledge and understanding thereof he

her former husband".

His wife was Margaret Hockenhull, first married to her cousin John Hocknell
who died on 23 April 1590 in Chester Castle, and was buried at Holy Cross,
Woodchurch, Cheshire on 26 April 1590, Generosi.

Margaret was buried as Margaret Ravenscroft in April 1613 also at Holy
Cross, Woodchurch, Gentlewoman.

From her Funeral Certificate, the following:

"Mrs. Margrett Hockenhull (1) late wife of John Hokenhull of Prenton, in
the County of Chester, Esq’r, dyed on the xxiijth day of April, A 1613, and
lyeth interred in Woodchurch in the said County.
She was daughter vnto Peter Hockenhull of Hocknell, in the County of
Chester, Esq’r, and had yssue by her said husband

John Hockenhull, their sone and heyr, who hath maryed Dorothy, daughter to
John Handcoks of Blakesley, in the County Of Northamt, gent., and they have
yssue Richard, sone and heyr apparent; Henry, 2nd son: Rauff, 3 son; and

Footnote 1
For some reason “Hocknell” has been crossed out in the original and
“Ravenscroft” substituted; this has apparently been done in error."

This Footnote has been added by whoever transcribed the certificate and who
was unaware of the marriage between Margaret Hockenhull and Edward
Ravenscroft.

I am still trying to trace which family Edward Ravenscroft belonged to, and
where he died and was buried.

In addition, ravens were used by the Templars ... tied in
with the prophet Elijah; as well, part of Norse mythology

This may be helpful in identifying your Edward Ravenscroft. In "The Family
of Ravenscroft", by W. Ravenscroft and Rev. R. Bathurst Ravenscroft (pub.
1915, London), a pedigree of the Bretton branch of the family shows a Edward
Ravenscroft of Aston Hall as mar. 1st to Mary [not Margaret] Hockenhull and
2nd to Anne, dau. of William Griffith of Aston. The second wife was bur. 17
Mar 1638/9. No other dates are given for Edward or his 1st wife, and no
issue is shown for him by either wife.

A fair amount of ancestry for Edward can be derived from the pedigree (with
the caveat that it should probably be verified elsewhere). In summary it
goes as follows:

Edward was son of George R. of Bretton (will proved 29 Nov 1592) and
Dorothy, dau. of John Davis.
George was son of Thomas R. of Bretton and Katharine, 3rd dau. of Richard
Grosvenor of Eaton
Thomas was son of George R. of Bretton and Eleanor ferch Richard ap Howell
of Mostyn
George was son of Ralph R. of Bretton and his 2nd wife Anne dau. of Sir John
Stanley of Wever
[several more generations are shown]

Hope this is helpful....

Dear John,

Many thanks indeed for your extremely helpful reply. I'm quite sure this is
the Edward Ravenscroft I'm looking for. I list below some additional
details which I have which I think confirm that Mary Hockenhull is indeed
one and the same as Margaret Hockenhull.

Thank you again, and regards,
Yvonne

"Another group of recusants and Catholics probably centred on Mrs Margaret
Hocknell, who, in the year of her husband's murder, was perpetuating her
faith by employing a recusant, John Cotgreve, to "teach schoole privatelie"
in her house: this was reported to the Visitors in 1590 along with her own
negligent attendance at church. As Margaret, wife of Edward Ravenscroft,
whom she married after her first husband's death, she was assessed for a
fine of £240 in the 1592-3 Recusant Roll."
