"For we must consider that we shall be a city upon a hill. The eyes of
all people are upon us, so that if we shall deal falsely with our God in
this work we have undertaken, and so cause him to withdraw His present
help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword through the world."

John Winthrop [1588-1649] _A Model of Christian Charity_ [1630], A
Sermon Delivered aboard Arbella, enroute to the New World; First
Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony.
-----------------------------------------------

Just as true today as it was in 1630...

On a curious and somewhat humorous note, John Winthrop, Governor of
Massachusetts Bay Colony, b. Edwardston, co. Suffolk, 12 Jan. 1587/8, d.
Boston, Mass., 26 March 1649 m. Great Stambridge, co. Essex, 16 March
1605 to Mary Forth, who died 26 June 1615 -- has an 8th great-grandson,
John Forbes Kerry, who came a cropper last year.

Kerry's descent from John Winthrop is through his mother -- Rosemary
Isabel Forbes, b. Paris 27 Oct. 1913, d. Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.,
14 Nov. 2002.

Great Stambridge is not far from me Spence, I would assume it was part of
the Bolyne estates, then later, under the Rich family. it's on the river Roch
not far from Rochford. It's known locally as Stambridge Mill, once a water
mill I think, Baltic Warf is close by (timber from Russia}

The Mass Bay Colony seems to owe a lot to Robert Rich (2nd earl of Warwick)
http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9076166
He seems to have given Hugh Peters employment in our local church and was
..involved with John Winthrop and Mary Forth. I wonder if Mary is connected
to the
Rich family, Henry apparently was a Royalist
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Rich ... of_Holland

It would seem the Mass Bay colony wouldn't have happened without Richard
Rich, "Chancellor of England" (usually portrayed as a Machiavellian
character)

Fascinating details, Jamie.

Thanks for posting them.

We seem to have at least one person here descended from Robert Rich --
and possibly several others.

Here's a picture of Stambridge church, it looks Norman / Saxon, so Mary was
probably among the congregation on Sunday, presumably she married John
Winthrop there.

Here's a picture of Stambridge Mill.
http://www.footstepsphotos.co.uk/Subjec ... illsp1.htm
The Thames Barges used to take grain up the Thames to London and bring back
horse manure (fertilizer) for the farms, the one pictured at Battelsbridge
is just behind me on the river Crouch, the Roch is a tributary of the Crouch
and all are tributaries of the Thames Estuary.

This area is the site of the Battle of Maldon and Cnut's victory over Edmund
Ironside in 1016 at Ashingdon, Cnut's fleet was very likely in the Roch
around Stambridge in case he needed another hasty retreat.
