CHILDREN OF SIR William Skipwith of Ormsby, Lincs., b. ca. 1488, d. 7
Jul 1547

Sir William Skipwith (1488-1547) was married twice: (1) to Elizabeth
Tyrwhit, dau. of Sir William Tyrwhit of Kettleby, Lincs.; (2) to Alice
Dymoke, dau. of Sir Lionel Dymoke and Joan Griffth.

All publications I have seen state that Henry Skipwith, Esq., d. 15 Aug
1588, who married Jane (Hall) Neale, widow of Francis Neale, and dau.
of Francis Hall and Ursula Sherington, was Sir William Skipwith's son
by Alice Dymoke. (This Henry Skipwith is my ancestor). There is a
funeral brass for Elizabeth (Tyrwhit) Skipwith at Bigby (according to
Adrian Channing) dated 1520. Richardson's MCA p. 753 states Skipwith
married Tyrwhit before 1510 and that she only bore Skipwith one son,
William. Faris in PA2 p. 331 says that Elizabeth had four sons and
four daughters by Sir William Skipwith. Faris in PA1, p. 253, just
says that Tyrwhit and Skipwith had issue.

The best discussion of this issue is found in THE PRICE, BLAKEMORE,
HAMBLEN, SKIPWITH AND ALLIED LINES (1992) by Jay Berry Price, and
edited Harry Hollingsworth, pp. 21-26. Price states that Sir William
Skipwith married Elizabeth Tyrwhit ca. 1505. By best account this
gives her at most some 15 years of child-bearing. This is certainly
enough time to have more than one child, and I think Faris' PA2 p.
331 may be correct in claiming eight children for this marriage.

Henry Skipwith, Esq. (was not knighted as claimed by Price) died 15 Aug
1588 and is buried at Tugby, Leicestershire, where there is a stone
monument which records the information that he was the 5th son of Sir
William Skipwith; his wife Jane (Hall) Skipwith is buried with him.
The monument was erected by Henry and Jane's son Henry.

Price quotes Nichols' THE HISTORY AND ANTIQUITIES OF COUNTY OF
LEICESTER, pp. 358-359 concerning the achievement of Henry and Jane
(Hall) Skipwith's son Sir William Skipwith (d. 3 May 1610) at the
church in Prestwould, Leic., which features the arms of "Dimok."
This settles the maternity of Henry Skipwith (died 15 Aug 1588), as the
only known Dymoke in the family is Alice Dymoke; it doesn't take a
rocket scientist to put this together.

Price states that Henry (d. 1588) was the only child of Sir William and
Alice. By Elizabeth Tyrwhit [according to Nichols and Fulwar
Skipwith's A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE SKIPWITHS OF NEWBOLD, METERINGHAM
AND PRESTWOULD (1867)], Sir William had:

1. William
2. Lionel
3. John
4. George
5. Elizabeth Clifford
6. Anne Hattecliffe
7. Bridget Cave
8. Eleanor (or Jane) Bolles

This account dovetails with the monumental inscription that shows that
Henry Skipwith, Esq. was the 5th son of Sir William. I think
Richardson relied on Massingberd's HISTORY OF THE PARISH OF
ORMSBY-CUM-KETSBY (1893) to his detriment, while Price came to roughly
the same conclusion as Faris' PA1 & PA2, although Faris claimed that
Sir William and Alice had four sons, without naming the first three; I
have never seen a similar claim, and have no idea who these "extra"
three sons would be.

[Richardson in his PA3 p. 659 assigns everybody but 1. William to
Alice, and adds three more daughters: Dorothy Gedney, Margaret
Tailboys, and Mary FitzWilliam; Gary Boyd Roberts in his RD600, p. 365
breaks with Richardson and says that Dorothy (Skipwith) Gedney's
maternity is uncertain, but she was probably the dau. of Elizabeth
Tyrwhit.]

Price (whose book has few errors and is an excellent treatment of the
Blakemore descendants of Elizabeth (Dale) Rogers) is correct in stating
that for the purposes of the descent from Alice Dymoke it does not
matter if other children are assigned to her or not, but it would be
nice to have as complete an account as possible.
