As mentioned in the recent thread on the de la Hay family of
Cambridgeshire, the Visitations for Cambs records the following for the
maternal grandparents of Joan Engaine, wife of Sir Baldwin St George (d
1425):

"William de la Hay of Shepreth married Sara, daughter of ... Pigott of
Ratcliff upon ford, Notts"

VCH Cambs vol 8 p 168 sub Foxton states that William de la Hay was
living in 1346, his father having died circa 1340.

As suggested by Mr Sutcliff, I had the opportunity to look into
Thoroton's History of Nottinghamshire today, and pp 24-28 of Volume One
contain material relative to Ratcliffe, generally called
Ratcliffe-on-Soar.

According to Thoroton:

"The family of Picot held this town and Kinston of the King in capite
by serjeancy of keeping hawks for him."

He gives the following stemma, largely referenced to primary sources
which remain checkable:

1. Peter Picot of Ratcliffe

2. Peter Picot of Ratcliffe, ff 13 John

3. Thomas Picot alias de Hedon ["after his residence at that manor of
his in Essex"]; had free warren at Ratcliffe, 37 Henry III

4. Peter Picot of Ratcliffe, ff 53 Henry III and 9 Edward I; a knight;
dead by 14 Edward I; held lands in Kent, Essex and Hertfordshire.

5a. John Picot, aged 24 in 14 Edward I [ie born circa 1261]; died 22
Edward I

5b. Peter Picot, aged 30 and more in 22 Edward I [ie born circa 1263];
heir to his brother John, c1285; died circa 7 Edward II [c1313];
married Joan, who survived him

5c. Margery Picot, dead by c1313; married ... Sieurville; left issue, a
son:

6a. Simon Sieurville, born circa 1273; nephew and coheir to Peter
Picot, c1313, then aged 40

5d. Isabella Picot, born circa 1253; sister and coheir to Peter Picot,
c1313, then aged 60; married ... Touke

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This does not appear to assist in placing Sara Picot, wife of William
de la Hay, who cannot have been of the generation before those listed
as 5 above (birth range before 1253-1263).
