Hello All,

In pursuit of solving the many riddles of the Campbells of
Loudoun, two items offer the hope of genuine advances in the near
(and not so near) future.

First, I have been advised by Andrew MacLean, archivist at Mount
Stuart (Bute) that while the collections there are inaccessible due
to ongoing renovations, these collections are to be catalogued
by the end of 2006. Subsequent to this, it is hoped that research
into the muniments of the Campbells of Loudoun can be undertaken.

Secondly, the ever-helpful Andrew MacEwen has noted a most
interesting record: a mandate dated 11 July 1439, correcting the
dispensation (or supplication for a dispensation) for George
Campbell of Loudoun and Agnes [Montgomery], widow of Robert
Cunyngham, of the diocese of Glasgow [1]. This dispensation
corrects an earlier supplication, in that the parties were related
in the 4th and 4th degrees of consanguinity (original stated as
being 'double' 4th and 4th), in the 'double' 4th and 4th degrees of
affinity (original stated as 'simple' 4th and 4th), & c.

Given that the 'next' George Campbell of Loudoun had a
dispensation for his marriage to Elizabeth Stewart (related in the
3rd and 4th degrees of consanguinity), it is hoped this link to the
better-know Montgomery of Eglinton family (and affinity with
Cunyngham of Kilmaurs) will lead to some definite advance in this
research.

As always, if anyone should have relevant comment and (esp.)
documentation, please advise.

Cheers,

John
