W. Bliss' _Calendar of Entries in the Papal Registers Relating to England,
Scotland, Ireland, and Wales_ , vol. 1, has 2 references to a son of King
John who, to my knowledge, has not been noticed by historians.

Identified as King John's son, Friar Bartholomew, a Dominican, was given a
dispensation in January 1252 to minister in the orders to which he had been
ordained, and to be promoted to the episcopate (Bliss, vol. 1: 281).

In Aug. 1254 Bartholomew had leave to converse at table with others of his
own congregation, or with Friars Minor (Bliss, 1: 305).

I have seen no other published references to Bartholomew, nor any reference
to him in secondary works. Has his paternity been conclusively disproved?

I am combing my notes for the citation to a notice in one of the edited Pipe
Rolls for John's reign that mentions an Exchequer reference to a "William
filius Regis." The word "regis" was apparently written in full & therefore
not an abbreviation for "Reginald." The editor was unsure whether this
William was actually a son of John, or possibly of Henry the Young King or
Richard I. I don't know if this reference is in my genealogical notes or
with my other notes since I probably jotted it down in connection with
research on the English administrative machinery, & I may never have
duplicated it for my genealogical files. If that is the case it will take
me some time to locate it.

Dear Mississippienne ~

King John's illegitimate son, Bartholomew, was a papal chaplain and a
member of the order of Friars Preachers. He was living in August 1254.
[References: Papal Regs.: Letters 1 (1893): 281 ("brother of king
Henry, being an illegitimate son of king John"), 286 ("the king's
brother"), 305].

For further information on King John's illegitimate children (including
Bartholomew), please see Douglas Richardson, Plantagenet Ancestry
