Children of Stephen, Count of Aumale - Nephew of William the

Dear Newsgroup ~

The source, William Farrer, ed., Early Yorkshire Charters, 3 (1916): 87
has a chart which shows the family of William the Conqueror's nephew,
Stephen, Count of Aumale (died c. 1127). According to Farrer, Count
Stephen and his wife, Hawise de Mortimer, had four sons, William [Count
of Aumale[, Stephen, Enguerrand, and Richard, and four daughters, Alice
(or Adeliza) (wife of Robert Bertram and Engelger de Bohun), _____
(wife of Girard, "Vidame" of Picquiny), _____ (wife of "Vidame" of
Gerberoy), and Agnes (wife of William de Roumare II and Adam de Brus).

I believe that Mr. Farrer's list is accurate, but, unfortunately he
provided no sources to support his statements regarding the daughters
who married Picquiny and Gerberoy. Since encountering Mr. Farrer's
chart, I've had trouble documenting the daughter who married the
"vidame" of Gerberoy in France. Recently, however, I located charter
of Count Stephen's son and heir, William, Count of Aumale (died 1179)
granted to Orsmby Priory, Lincolnshire in the period, 1150-1160. Among
the witnesses to this charter was Count William's nephew, W. de
Gerberoy ["W. nepos comitis de Gerberai.") [Reference: F.M. Stenton,
ed., Transcripts of Charters relating to the Gilbertine Houses of
Sixle, Ormsby, Catley, Bullington and Alvingham (Lincoln Rec. Soc. 18)
(1922): 41].

Research indicates that the Gerberoy family were vidames of Beauvais in
France. As such, it would appear that Count William's nephew, W. de
Gerberoy, must be sought among that family. If anyone has information
on the Gerberoy family, I'd apppreciate if they would post it here on
the newsgroup.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
