Ancestral to the Manningham family of Wrestlingham et al, and thus
apparently to the St George family (and through them the Countess of
Wessex, Dukes of Leinster etc) are the de Herefords.

Herewith a stemma, based largely on VCH Beds Vol 2 pp 256-257 and Hunts
Vol 3 p 333:

[1. Elias Tailbois, presented the advowson of Wrestlingham, Beds, to
Newnham Priory at the beginning of the 13th century (Harl MS 3656);
dead by 1231; issue:]

2. Cicely Tailbois, daughter and heir; married Imbert de Hereford (Feet
of Fine, Beds, 15 Henry III); of Wrestlingham, 1231; issue:

3. Robert de Hereford alias Luvet, granted (together with Roger le Mire
and his wife Rose, and William Daules and his wife Juliana) a moiety of
the manor of Little Paxton, Hunts, by Gilbert le Moyne, 1241 [Feet of
Fine, Hunts, Case 92, file 7 #123]; held at least two of the three
portions of the moiety by his death [IPM Henry VI file 82 #51]; dead by
1271; issue:

4. Roger de Hereford, a minor in 1271; issue:

5. Robert de Hereford alias de Tollesland, granted the moiety of Little
Paxton by his father; inherited Wrestlingbury; living in 1316; married
Juliana, daughter and eventual coheiress of Sir Adam de Crookdake;
issue:

6. John de Hereford, inherited Little Paxton, 1322; died 1341; issue:

7a. Regeinald de Hereford, a minor in 1342; died without issue

7b. Eleanor de Hereford, heiress to her brother; died 1407; married
firstly John Raghton; married secondly John Brown. Issue:

Is it Wrestlingham or Wrestlingworth? Did you get Manningham confused in
part with the name of the location or am I wrong?

Some de Hereford items from various sources:

PART I:

A.

Proof of age: John, son of Robert de Touleslond, kinsman and one of the
heirs of John de Crokedek deceased, who held of King Edward II in
chief: writ 18 March 10 Edward III, proof taken at Bedford, 7 April 10
Edward III [1335]: the said John was 21 on the feast of St Peter ad
Vincula 9 Edward III, for he was born at Wrastlyngworth and baptised in
the church there in 7 Edward II, when Robert de Touleslond, father of
the said John, presented John Denbleines to the church of
Wrastlyngworth about the feast of All Saints after the birth of the
said John A.D. 1314; William de Eglesfelde, in whose wardship the lands
&c were by the late King's commissioner, warned to be present, came not
nor sent anyone on his behalf.

[Cal. IPMs Vol. 8, Edward III, #59 pp 32-33]

********************

B.

John de Towleslond: writ 28 July 15 Edward III; inquest at Biggleswade,
Bedfordshire, 10 August 15 Edward III:
Wrestlingworth: 88 acres arable, messuage held jointly with Alice his
wife who survives, and 60 acres arable, and 40 (?s) rent; he died 6
February 15 Edward III. Reginald his son, aged 6 and more, is his
heir.

[Cal. IPMs Vol. 8, Edward III, #326]

***********************

C.

John de Tolleslond or Toulleslond: writ 27 April 19 Edward III:
Huntingdonshire: inquest at Huntingdon, 16 May 19 Edward III: Paxton:
he died on this side of the Purification 15 Edward III; Reginald his
son aged 9 and more is next heir.
Bedfordshire: inquest at Bedford, Monday after St Matthew, 19 Edward
III: Wrestlingworth: messuage and 60 acres of land held jointly with
Alice his wife; 88 acres of land; died Friday before the Purification
16 (sic) Edward III; heir as above, aged 11 years.
Cumberland: inquest at Carlisle, 10 July 20 (sic) Edward III: Gamelesby
and Forneby: property including that subject to a moiety of dower of
Margaret late the wife of John de Crokedayk, and the dower of Helen
late the wife of John son of John de Crokedayk; lands at
Burgh-on-sands, Grenrig in Caldebek; other reversions.
Bedfordshire: inquest 28 June 21 (sic) Edward III: Ralph de Tykesore
afterwards married his widow Alice. Heir: Reginald as above, aged 15
years.

Thus, we know that John de Hereford alias de Tollesland married Alice,
and after his death she married secondly to Ralph de Tyksore.

As threatened: Part II

D.

John de Raghton: writ 16 December 47 Edward III: inquest at Carlisle,
Tuesday after St Patrick, 48 Edward III:
Held Raghton, Gaytscals, etc; died 23 September 42 (sic) Edward III;
Oliver his son is heir, aged 8; William de Stapelton has been in
possession since John de Raghton's death by virtue of an estate he
claims to have been... to deceased and Margaret his wife - John de
Raghton survived the said Margaret

[Cal. IPMs Vol 14, Edward III, #48 pp45-6]

So we can deduce that John de Raghton was married firstly to Margaret,
and then, as a widower, to Eleanor de Hereford.

***********************

E.

Oliver, son and heir of John de Raghton: writ to the escheator in
County Bedford to take proof of age of the said Oliver who is said to
have been born at Wrastlyngworth and baptised in the church of that
town, warning the executors of William de Stapleton, in whose custody
are the lands of the inheritance of the said Oliver by virtue of a
commitment of the same by King Edward III to the said William until the
lawful age of the said Oliver, to be present at the proof: 29 January 9
Richard II [1386].
Proof of age: February... [fragment only]

[Cal. IPMs Vol XVI 7-15 Richard II, #344 p 125]

Robert de Hereford alias Luvet, granted (together with Roger le Mire
and his wife Rose, and William Daules and his wife Juliana) a moiety of
the manor of Little Paxton, Hunts, by Gilbert le Moyne, 1241 [Feet of
Fine, Hunts, Case 92, file 7 #123]; held at least two of the three
portions of the moiety by his death [IPM Henry VI file 82 #51]; dead by
1271

From VCH Hunts Vol ii, p 319 et seq, it would appear that Robert de
Hereford's wife was Isabella, probably afterwards wife of Sir John de

Offord, and possibly also (1315) of Peter de Mareschall. She seems to
have been daughter or matrilineal granddaughter of William le Daneys,
ff 1261.
