De La Hay of Shepreth, Cambs

Ancestral to the St Georges of Hatley St George are the de la Hay
family of Shepreth.

According to the Visitation of Cambridgeshire 1575-1619, the line was
thus:

1. William de la Hay, knight, Lord of Shepreth, Foxton and Papworth
Everard, Cambs; issue:

2. John de la Hay

3. Sir William de la Hay, knight, 9 Edward II; married Joan; issue:

4. Sir John de la Hay of Shepreth, knight, 1 Edward III; married Joan;
issue:

5. William de la Hay of Shepreth
married Sara, daughter of ... Pigott of Ratcliff upon ford, Notts;
issue:

6. Margaret de la Hay, heir: married Sir John Engaine, knight; [of
Teversham, Cambs]; 36 Edward III. Issue:

7. Joan Engaine, daughter and coheir; married Sir Baldwin St George
[died 1425; his brass confirming this date is at Hatley St George
church]

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

VCH Cambs Vol 8 p 168 sub Foxton largely supports the above, except
that it conflates generations 5 and 6 by making Margaret the sister and
heir, rather than daughter, of William.

(Also additional is the wife of William at #1: she was Parnel, daughter
and eventual heiress of Alan de Shepreth, ff 1200, Lord of Foxton and
Shepreth, in turn son of an earlier Alan de Shepreth.)

VCH states that #3 Sir William de la Hay died in 1316, and his son, #4
Sir John de la Hay died circa 1340, while #5 William de la Hay was
still living in 1346.

Roskell et al in the 'History of Parliament 1386-1421', Vol 2 sub
Dengaine also states that Sir John Dengaine of Teversham married
firstly Margaret, daughter of Sir John de la Hay and sister of William
de la Hay of Shepreth (and secondly Joan, daughter of John, Lord
Northwood); VCH Cambs Vol 8 o 168 is cited as one of the sources.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

A document on A2A, however, suggests that the generations as laid out
by the Visitation are correct, rather than VCH Cambs:

Lancs Record Office: DDTO/09/14 dated 1396:

Recovery: William de Blyton and Mary his wife, and Baldwin
Seyntgeorgg', chivaler, and Joan his wife v. Joan, who was wife of John
Dengayne, chivaler, of 16 messuages, 92 acres of land, 16 acres of
meadow, 9 acres of pasture and 25 shillings of rent in Schepreth and
Little Euersdon, and the manor of Shepreth, except one messuage, 15
acres of land and 5 acres of meadow in the same manor, which Ralph
Crecy, late parson of the church of Thorpe by Asschborn, gave to John
de la Hay and Joan his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, remainder
to William de la Hay and the heirs of his body; after the death of John
and Joan the premises descended to William de la Hay and Margaret his
daughter, and ought to descend to Mary and Joan the wife of Baldwin,
daughters and heirs of the said Margaret.

I started to research the ancestry of Sarah Pigot to see if it was in
Thoroton, but I got sidetracked by the Annesley ancestry of Joan Annesley,
wife of John Iwardby, ancestor of Elizabeth St. John, wife of Sir Richard
St. George, Clarenceux King of Arms. Hope to have more time for this
tomorrow or Friday.
