When did the name Edna come into vogue? I'm aware that the wife of
Ezekiel Northend of Rowley, Mass.--an early settler--is said to have
been one Edna Halsted, widow of Richard Baily.

I see there is an extracted record in the IGI for the birth of an Edna
Halsted, daughter of Henry, 13 March 1597 at Middleton By Oldham,
Lancashire. As Edna Halsted, wife of Baily and Northend, is said to be
daughter of Nathan Halsted, *and* as the child born in 1597 indeed had
a brother called Nathan, maybe this is a clue.

Or is it already known?

Title of thread should read Halsted, not Hasted.

Poetic ... if I _do_ say so myself ...

Edna is the wife of Raguel in the book of 'Tobit', in the Apochrypha.
The name therefore has an ancient heritage. I think its being in vogue
is much more recent - I can't recall having come across any pre 19th
century examples, although clearly it was always available for use.
