PART I:
Various websites make reference to Robert Haffenden, a 16th century
Jurat [Alderman] of Tenterden, Kent, presumably because he is alleged
to have had descendants who were early settlers in New England. Most
of these have wild guesses as to his dates; there is an entry in
Burke's Landed Gentry which is also quite inaccurate. Here is what can
be pieced together of this family:
1. Thomas Haffenden of Tenterden, died 1525; will dated 24 October
1525, proved Archdeacon's Court, Canterbury, 11 December 1525 (Vol.
17, fol. 16):
"the 24th day of October the year of our Lord God 1525; I, Thomas
Haffenden of Tenterden, being whole of mind and in good remembrance
make my testament and last will in this manner: my body to be buried in
the churchyard of the parish church of St. Mildred ... Tenterden
aforesaid; to Elizabeth Haffenden my daughter, 40s and a brass pot and
a pair of sheets and a heifer; to each of Thomasine and Joan my
daughters each of them 20s to their marriage and if any of them shall
die before marriage, the one to be the other's heir; also to the said
Thomasine my daughter a heifer; to John Haffenden my son a corn-wain, a
harrow, an axe, ... a broad-axe, a chisel, an auger, a gutting axe, a
cross-bow..., a long-bow and my arrows; to George Haffenden my son a
long cross-bow; to Moine Haffenden my son my sword; residue to Agnes
my wife, she whom I make and ordain my Executrix; I will that my
feoffees suffer the said Agnes my wife to have, occupy and take the
profit of my messuage, gardens and a piece of land, that is to say, the
Great Knoll, Little Knoll, Cornerhouse Croft, Helle Knoll, Jakscroft,
Barnefield, Knottsfield, Harristoname, Gerritsfield for life, then
equally to my three youngest sons, Robert, Thomas and Philip, at their
age of 22 years old if their mother die before that time. And also I
will that my feoffees deliver or cause to be delivered unto the
foresaid John, Harry, Moyne and George my sons my lands called
Melfield, Knottsgrove, Holmysgrove, Whitrede and Playrede, to have and
to hols to the said John, Harry, Moyne and George for and by even
portions among them". Proved 11th of December 1525.

meant.

RE: Haffenden of Tenterden
Dear Michael,
If you have info that questions the identification of a family that bridges
from the early American colonial period into the Medieval period, I would
vote for presenting that evidence. I believe such a discussion does fit the
scope of this group.

Re: Haffenden of Tenterden
Hal,
My concerns about the Iggulden line into Massachussetts is expressed in
the following notes concerning the children of Stephen Iggleden and
Sarah Haffenden. I'm afraid that these are largely based on on-line
sources, and are thus not properly referenced, given that this line is
rather tangential to mine, but they might serve as a pointer as to
whether there is an issue, and (if so) how it might be researched:
1a. Stephen Iggleden, baptised at Biddenden, 17 January 1607/8; dead by
1638 (perhaps died on ship en route to America); married at Benenden,
30 November 1628, Elizabeth Bennett, who is said to have emigrated to
America with her daughters per "Castle", 1638, arriving as a widow,
and to have married secondly at Roxbury, Mass., 10 April 1642 Joseph
Patchen (arrived per "Hercules", 1634, as servant to Thomas
Besbeech); she apparently died at Roxbury, 10 March 1680/1; buried at
Fairfield, Connecticut. Issue:
2a. Elizabeth Iggleden, baptised at Biddenden, 31 January 1629/30;
buried there, 25 July 1630
2b. Ruth Iggleden, baptised at Biddenden, 8 November 1631; one of this
name (who died 14 October 1703) married at Woburn, Massachusetts, 13
December 1655 Samuel Blodgett, born 1633; died at Woburn, 3 July 1687,
and had issue, according to IGI; however, a 1674 lawsuit referred to
online suggests that her mother was Jane, the wife in turn of James
Britton and Isaac Cole (per "Hercules", 1634) - vide infra [i.e.
not Elizabeth - this is the 'fly in the ointment'].
2c. Elizabeth Iggleden, baptised at Biddenden, 11 May 1634
2d. Hannah Iggleden, baptised at Biddenden, 9 October 1636; emigrated
to America 1638; presumably Joseph Patchen's Iggleden step-daughter
who died at Roxbury, Massachusetts, 20 December 1646, "about ten
years old", from "a paine first in her head, then in her back".
1b. Sarah Iggleden, born circa 1609; mentioned in her father's will
of 1624
1c. John Iggleden, born circa 1611; mentioned in his father's will,
1624; one of this name emigrated to America per "Hercules" 1634
with Thomas Besbeech, and was presumably of Fairfield, Massachusetts;
died 1659; married Peaceable (who is said to have married secondly
circa 1660 Daniel Silliman and died before 5 July 1661); they had a son
John, born 4 September 1657 who died young. Also aboard "Hercules"
with Thomas Besbeech's party were Elizabeth, Jane and Sarah
"Egelden" - the four Iggledens may have been children in his
care.
Furthermore, Mrs. Jane or Joan Iggleden, born circa 1600, married
secondly James Britton and thirdly at Woburn, Mass., 1 February 1658
Isaac Cole, per "Hercules", 1634. She had at least two daughters:
Ruth Iggleden - vide supra, and Sarah Iggleden, married at Woburn, 28
August 1650 John Nutting.

Re: Haffenden of Tenterden
OT: subsequent descent of Bugglesden, Tenterden, Kent [apologies for
off-topic chronology]
I have been contacted off-list with a query about the descent of the
Bugglesden estate near Halden in Kent (outside of Tenterden), long
owned by the Haffendens.
I note the following in respect of this property:
"The Haffendens had lived at Haffenden Quarter between Biddenden and
High Halden since the fourteenth century, and later at Bugglesden to
the north-west of Tenterden." (History of Tenterden) [Next to
Bugglesden is Haffenden Farm - MAR]
"The Haffendens have been long resident in the county of Kent, at
Tenterden and Smarden, Halden - Bugglesden, in the north part of
Boresile Borough, being anciently, and up to a very recent period,
their property and abode; that estate descending from Robert Haffenden,
of Bugglesden, to his brother, John Haffenden, Esq., of Charing, was
conveyed, by the only child of the latter, Amy Haffenden, in marriage,
to William Hawker, Esq... Arms: Chequy, sa. and arg., on a bend, az.,
three mullets, or; crest: an eagle's head, couped." (Burke's Landed
Gentry, 1846)
So far as I can work out, Bugglesden passed thus:
A. Robert Haffenden (1554-1614); earliest Haffenden owner of Bugglesden
known to me; bequeathed Bugglesden to his third surviving son:
B. Thomas Haffenden (1597-1671); inherited Bugglesden from his father,
1614; recorded as having a house with five hearths in Boresile, 1664
[probably Bugglesden]; his eldest son predeceased him in July 1653,
leaving two daughters, to whom the estate possibly passed.
*************
C. John Curteis, sold the Bugglesden estate to Robert Haffenden by
1701:
D. Robert Haffenden (1665-1701), jurat of Tenterden; son of Robert and
Elizabeth Haffenden, whom I have not as yet firmly placed into the main
Haffenden of Tenterden line; he was Mayor of Tenterden in the year of
his death. By his will dated 21 November 1701 he bequeathed Bugglesden
to his eldest son, Robert:
E. Robert Haffenden (1691 - 17??); apparently no issue; left Bugglesden
to his next brother John:
F. John Haffenden (1693-1769); of Charing, Kent; left Bugglesden to his
daughter and heir, Amy:
G. Amy Haffenden (c1753-1825); inherited Bugglesden from her father;
married William Hawker (c1745-1819), surgeon of Charing; they had two
sons and four daughters. As noted above, Bugglesden thus passed into
the Hawker family.
I have not traced its descent past this point.

G. Amy Haffenden (c1753-1825); inherited Bugglesden from her father;
married William Hawker (c1745-1819), surgeon of Charing; they had two
sons and four daughters. As noted above, Bugglesden thus passed into
the Hawker family.
I have not traced its descent past this point.

Re: Haffenden of Tenterden
Just wondering if there is a connection with the Hovenden's of
Cranbrook. Sometimes Ovenden. Medieval spelling was variable to say the
least! The family were noted clothiers/weavers

Re: Haffenden of Tenterden
They used very similar arms, and as you note, the spelling variations
indicate that they both spring from the same original stem.
Here is what I have on the Cranbrook family:
Robert Hovenden, yeoman & clothier of Cranbrook, where he owned two
fields adjacent to his mansion-house, named Sheepfield and Pondfield; a
tenement at Cranbrook called Hodes and another called Foxendge; two
tenements at Hawkhurst; a tenement at Hasilwood, Cranbrook and other
lands at Cranbrook; assessed for £10 in the loan to King Henry VIII in
1542; will dated 17 September 1557, proved P.C.C. 27 April 1558; see
Miscellanea Genealogica & Heraldica, Vol 1, pp 248-253, 288-296;
married Anne, bequeathed various items of personal estate by her
husband, 1557; issue:
(1) John Hovenden, eldest son; executor and residual beneficiary to his
father, 1557; inherited his father's house, lands and mill at
Cranbrook, 1558
(2) Ald. Thomas Hovenden, bequeathed £50 and two tenements at
Hawkhurst by his father, 1557, then aged under 20; three times Mayor of
Canterbury; armiger, according to his funeral certificate issued by the
College of Arms [Book I 22, f. 35], bore "chequy, sable and argent,
on a bend azure, three lions' heads [?or]; a crescent for
difference" (ie second son, although the order of bequests in his
father's will suggests he was third-born son, so perhaps his elder
brother John predeceased him without issue); died in his house at
Canterbury, 27 December 1619; buried in the Cathedral Church at
Canterbury; married at St Alphege's, Canterbury, 14 September 1574
Sarah Sare, daughter of Ald. Stephen Sare, sometime Mayor of
Canterbury; executrix to her husband; her will dated 8 June 1628,
proved P.C.C. 28 September 1635
(a) Anne Hovenden, only daughter, died aged eighteen, unmarried, during
her father's lifetime

unmarried; married Robert Bathurst, probably of Staplehurst; left
issue; see Misc. Heraldica, Vol 3, 5th series, p 140
(4) Richard Hovenden, bequeathed £50 and a tenement called Hodes with
14 acres and two other tenements at Cranbrook by his father, 1557, then
aged under 20; possibly died 1598; married, possibly firstly at
Cranbrook, 28 November 1560 and secondly at Cranbrook, Alice Sheafe,
buried at Cranbrook, 21 December 1616; issue
(a) John Hovenden
(b) Mary Hovenden, married John Baker
(c) Margaret Hovenden
(d) Thomas Hovenden
(5) Giles Hovenden, bequeathed £50 and two tenements at Hasilwood,
Cranbrook by his father, 1557, then aged under 20; one of this name
mentioned, Archaeologia Cantiana, Vol 28, p 14; [cf Giles Hovenden,
Captain of Levidstown, said to have come from Kent to Ireland and to
have had at least two sons: Walter, died 1597, and John]; married at
Goudhurst, 20 April 1577 Ann Horsmonden; issue
(a) Robert Hovenden, baptised at Goudhurst, 10 April 1580
(b) Giles Hovenden, baptised at Goudhurst, 15 May 1586; married at
Goudhurst, 9 October 1614 Elizabeth Hartenden
(6) Alice Hovenden, bequeathed £40 by her father, 1557, then unmarried
(7) Anne Hovenden, bequeathed four marks per annum by her father, 1557,
so perhaps unlikely to marry and thus in some way handicapped
