New England Colonists: various items

Legg inn av Gjest » 04 okt 2005 08:18:13

The following are various items Ive found in English records
relating to New England colonists, which I have not yet published.

There seem to be at least a few persons on this group who are
interested in
this subject.

In 1999, Douglas Richardson published the English origin of the
brothers
John, James, Abraham, Joseph and Jacob Parker, who went to Woburn and
Chalmsford Mass. in 1640 and afterwards.
The baptism of James had not been found.

The will of Mary Salmon of Great Burstead, Essex, spinster,
proved 1627/8, names all of these brothers, as sons of her kinsman
John Parker woolendraper & his wife Hannah.
The will also names kinsman Joseph Raven; Clement son of kinswoman
Mary Hills of Bradwell by Coggeshall; and grandchildren
Grace Reeve & Sara & Mary Baker. I have not been able
to find how they are interrelated.
---------------------

The will of Amos Woodward, of Colchester, Essex, carpenter,
proved 1666/7, mentions "children of uncle Woodward in New England".

This is probably a reference to Richard Woodward, who emigrated from
nearby Ipswich in 1635, and who had a grandson named Amos.

The testator Amos mentions his own children and sisters, among
others, but the marriages for Amos and his sisters do not appear in
Boyd's Marriage Indexes for Essex & Suffolk, so probably the records
have not survived.
--------------------------

Mary (Wood), wife of Richard Platt of New Haven, Ct. appears to be
a first cousin of the widow Martha (Wood) Beard, of Milford Ct.
They originated from neighboring parishes in Essex, and their fathers
both left wills mentioning land in Hunsdon co. Hertford.
(The article by John Coddington in TAG seems to have missed the will
for Mary (Wood) Platt's father, which is extant.)
-------------------

I also mentioned that the manuscripts of Charles Banks include the
marriage of colonist Leonard Chester.
The entry, dated 5 May 1633 at Faxton co. Northampton, says that
Leonard
was from Blaby co. Leicester, and names his wife as Mary, but her
surname
is too darkened to read.
A search in the few Wade wills for that time & region have not
found anything further.

Thanks, the illegible entry in the Faxton register is fascinating.
Maybe some Chester descendant would be willing to spend the money to
have someone look at the original under ultraviolet (?).

This item from A2A ("Herrick Family Papers") might relate to his
mothers family (wasn't she a Sharpe of Frisby?) ...

FILE [no title] - ref. MS.Eng.hist./c.477/fols.242-3 -
date: 1611/12 January 26
hit[from Scope and Content] Thomas Hebbe writes, from
Beaumanor, to Sir William Heyricke of the reluctance of Heyricke's
tenants in Derbyshire to pay their rents until assured of his claim to
the property. Their doubts had been roused by the writ to distrein on
Sir Germanus Poole's estate, therefore they had appointed Lamynge, a
Derby Councillor, to settle the matter with Heyricke. Hebbe had given
Mr Wincoll a copy of the extent of Heyricke's property at Leicester
Quarter Sessions, had asked Hunt for details of land in Barrow, Leics,
and discussed with Sharpe payment of rent for land in Frisby, Leics.

I would expect that her surname is in fact Wade.

But finding her ancestry may not be as simple as we would like.

Her parents could have

1 died intestate,

2 not mentioned her in their wills (removed Christopher Barrett of
Norwich?)

3 or just said "to my daughter Mary and her children..."
