Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage, 9 (1936): 251-254 (sub Mortimer of Chirk) includes a
good account of the life history of Roger de Morimter, Lord Mortimer of
Chirk (died 1326). Regarding his marriage, the following information
is given:

"He married Lucy la Wafre."

No date of their marriage is given in the text.

Chris Phillips has surmised that Roger and Lucy were "presumably they
were married by 8 June 1286, when Roger de Mortimer presented to
Tedstone Wafer [Canterbury and York Society, vol. 6, p. 526 (1909); cf.
J. Duncumb, Collections towards the History and Antiquities of the
County of Hereford, vol. 2, part 1, p. 263, which gives the date as
1285]."

I find that Lucy is specifically named as Roger de Mortimer's wife in
his charter dated "die tunc proxima post apostolorum Petri et Pauli,
anno Domini MCCCIII" [i.e., 30 June 1304] [Reference: William Dugdale,
Monasticon Anglicanum, 6 Pt. 1 (1830): 402-403].

While the 1304 charter is dated at Chirk, Roger de Mortimer is styled
"lord of Wyfretone" (or "Wynfretone") in the charter. The locality
Wyfretone/Wynfretone can be identified as Winforton, Herefordshire,
where Roger de Mortimer obtained a charter of free warren also in 1304.

For those interested in viewing Roger de Mortimer's charter naming his
wife, Lucy, they may do so on the monasticmatrix website:
