Canadian Surprise

This Sir William Johnson, 1st Baronet, has become quite a surprise package for me.

Was he or wasn't he married to the mother of the 2nd Baronet? In 1999 Burke's recorded the 7th Baronet of this family who has a son and grandsons and so this family is continuing.

In the first generations things did not go so smooth. Sir William 1st Baronet is the father of John 2nd Baronet. This 2nd Baronet had at least five sons. The eldest son of the 2nd Baronet was Lt.-Col William Johnson who married Susan de Lancy, daughter of Stephen de Lancy, Governor of Tobago. This William born 1775 died in 1812 and his widow married in 1815 General Sir Hudson Lowe who was Governor of St.Helens when Napoleon Bonaparte was imprisoned there.
William and Susan had three daughters but only one, Charlotte, married. Charlotte married the Russian Count Alexander Balmain, who was a Commissioner on St.Helens during the same time.

As a result the title went to the 3rd son of the 2nd Baronet, this 3rd Baronet died unmarried, and the 4th Baronet was his nephew. The 4th Baronet died childless in 1908 and his nephew was the 5th Baronet. and he died childless in 1957. The next and 6th Baronet was a distant cousin, and he was father of the present Baronet. In the male line there are quite a few Johnson descendants and even more in the female line.

In all for a man who may not have been married at all but had children by at least eight women (thanks Henry Soszynski ) his descendants have become numerous. I would love to know about the descendants of Molly Brant. Her son, Peter or George, married a Native American and their descendants are pretty close cousins of several English Earls and a Spanish Duchess.

Many thanks to all who responded, it all added to a very interesting genealogy.
